Fil-Am singer moves on to Apollo finals

NEW YORK --- A young Filipino-American singer made it to the final rounds of a singing competition at Apollo Theater in Harlem.
Jamie Ciello, a finalist at last year’s “Filipino Idol” competition in Jersey City, placed second in the semi-finals held last Wednesday, and will compete in the final rounds on Sept. 22.
“Inside the theater, there were about 2,000 people giving support for Jamie in the semis,” said Hector Magno, a supporter.
Interestingly, winners of the Apollo singing competition are selected by audience applause. If the audience don’t like the performance, the contestant gets booed and forced out of the competition.
Jamie Ciello “I felt a deep sense of obligation as a Filipino that night. I said to myself, ‘Hector, you’ll have to let go and shout at the top of your lungs. I have never shouted and applauded so loudly in my life. I was jumping up and down, almost getting a hoarse voice,” Magno said.
With her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I’m Every Woman,” Ciello wowed the crowd and placed second. She was the only non African-American contestant.
Meanwhile, Magno and his friends mobilized the support of the Filipino community. Carpool services, as well as group rate tickets, were offered for those who are willing to cheer on for Ciello.
Ciello was the guest performer at the Greatest Hitmakers Concert in Atlantic City. She also performed at the Philippine-American Friendship Day in Jersey City and Queens, NY.
Apollo Theater is located at 253 West 125th Street, near where former president Bill Clinton maintains his New York office.
