JERSEY CITY, September 23, 2004 ---- The members and volunteers of the Philippine American Friendship Committee, Inc.--Community Development Center (PAFCOM-CDC) joined the walkathon held at the Lincoln Park in Jersey City on Saturday.
Dubbed as “Take a Walk for Life,” PAFCOM-CDC took action to improve the health of Filipino-Americans. The event was part of the celebration of New Jersey Minority and Multicultural Health Month 2004.
The focus of the walkathon is on obesity, its impact on the community and the steps needed to combat this epidemic Obesity, according to reports, strikes even harder in minority communities.
Studies show that obesity is linked to a host of diseases, including diabetes, cancer and cardio-vascular disease.
In 1991, the prevalence of obesity was almost 10 percent. It increased by 19 percent in 2001.
PAFCOM-CDC is a non-profit organization currently funded by the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services to provide community health mobilization program to prevent heart disease and stroke.
