NEW YORK, September 23, 2004 --- As the U.S. presidential elections draw closer, Democrat candidate John F. Kerry is gaining a strong support from the Filipino-American voters.
Last Wednesday 75 Filipino-American leaders from Washington, D.C. and nine states endorsed Kerry and his running mate John Edwards. Hollywood celebrity Tia Carrere, and Hawaii Governor Ben Cayetano were also among those who expressed support.
“I am proud to receive the endorsement of so many leaders in the Filipino-American community,” Kerry said in a statement. “Filipino-Americans understand that there is a fundamental choice in this election —- whether to continue in the wrong direction ofthe last four years or work together to build a stronger America, more respected in the world.”
The Filipino-American voters said their primary reasons for supporting Kerry include the presidential candidate’s plan to create jobs, reduce the cost of health care and his commitment to improve education. They also cited Kerry and Edwards’ pledge to improve U.S. relations with the Philippines.
“John Kerry and John Edwards have consistently demonstrated that they understand the issues and concerns of the Filipino-American community,” said Mark Pulido, school board member for the ABC Unified School district in California. “I intend to work very hard in the next 50 days to ensure that John Kerry is the next President of the United States.”
Some of Filipino-American leaders criticized Pres. George W. Bush and compared his present administration with Kerry’s platform of governance, if elected on Nov. 2.
Mona Pasquil, director of Community Outreach for the Kerry-Edwards campaign, said that Bush’s policies have failed Filipinos and other members of the Asian and Pacific Islander-American (APIA) community.
“In 2003 alone, 240, 000 more Asian and Pacific Islander-Americans fell into poverty but household incomes fell over $3,800. There were 96,000 Asians and Pacific Islander-Americans lost their health insurance last year,” she said in an interview. “John Kerry and John Edwards have a plan to get Filipino-Americans moving in the right direction.”
Pasquil also admired Kerry’s “profound gratitude for the service of Filipino veterans.”
