4 Fil-Am young achievers to be honored by Philcom Foundation


JERSEY CITY, November 1, 2004 --- Four young Filipino-Americans who graduated with honors from college in school year 2003-2004 will be feted at the 6th Annual Awards Night and Foundation Ball of the Philippine Community Center Foundation of NJ, Inc. (Philcom) on Nov. 21, from 7 p.m. to 12:00 midnight, at the Marriott Hotel, Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, NJ.

The youth achievement awards project is the Foundation’s way of refocusing attention to the value of a college education and is meant to encourage academic excellence among the youth, according to Louisiana D. Manuel, president and board chairperson of Philcom Center-NJ.

Manuel said that the honorees are testament to the fact that Filipinos and Filipino-Americans are “emerging successfully in this highly competitive world of diverse cultures.”

The four Filipino-American honor graduates are:

Marco A. Bote
Marco graduated magna cum laude with the degree of Bachelor of Science, major in Business Management Information System, from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. A recipient of the Pirate Pride Award (Seton Hall University’s Leadership Award), he was senior class president, intern student organization, and vice president of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Association. He was a member of the Sigma Eta Upsilon Chapter. Proficient with sophisticated computer applications, Marco is currently sales manager of the Goodyear Tire Company and an associate encoder/deposit correction system for the Wachovia Bank Corp. The son of Cecilia and Edgardo A. Bote of Jersey City, Marco has a brother, Edgardo, and sister, Maria Isabel.

Michelle A. Fernandez
Currently working as a registered nurse at the post-cardiac surgery unit of the New York University Medical Center, Michelle graduate cum laude in May 2004 from Rutgers, the State University of New York, with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She passed the NCLEX Board of Nursing examination last July. She has been consistently in the Dean’s List and was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Society of Nursing. In addition to excelling in academics, Michelle is a guitarist for the Paaralang Pilipino Rondalla School of Music and previously reigned as Reyna Elena II at a Santacruzan Festival in Jersey City. She is the daughter of Tony and Elsa Fernandez , both CPAs residing in Jersey City, and sister of Dr. Lisa Fernandez, a past honoree for academic excellence of the Philippine Community Center Foundation of NJ, Inc. The family resides in Jersey City.

Jahzeel Hernandez
Jahzeel graduated cum laude with the degree of Bachelor of Science in nursing in May 2004 from the Rutgers College of Nursing. Now a licensed registered professional nurse, she is currently employed at the surgical intensive care unit of the St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick. A member of the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing, she was a recipient of the Philippine Nurses Association of NJ Scholarship Award in 2003, the RWJUH Employee of the Health Career Scholarship Award in 2001, and the “5 Star Service” Award of the St. Peter’s University Hospital in 2003. She has gained clinical experiences from the St. Peter’s University Hospital, the Monmouth Medical Center, the Bayshore Health Center and the Newark Beth Israel Hospital. The daughter of Gregoria and Victor Hernandez, Sr. of Franklin Park, NJ, Jahzeel has two sisters, Jamaila and Gianina, and a brother Victor Jr.

Elaine Marie T. Magallon
Elaine graduate cum laude from the Steven Institute of Technology with the degree of Bachelor of Science in chemical biology, with double minors in mathematics and social science. A recipient of the Edward J. Bloustein Scholarship, Elaine has obtained American Chemical Society Accreditation. Not limiting her success to academics, she also excelled in athletics and was very active in the campus community as member of the Gear and Triangle Honor Society, president and past vice president of the Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honor Society, president of the Filipino Association of Stevens Tech (FAST), vice president of IDC, secretary of the Student Athletic Advisory Council, scholarship chairperson of the Panhellenic Council, and recruitment chairperson and house manager of the Omicron Pi Sorority. The only daughter of Antonio Magallon and Evelyn Tiburcio Magallon of Columbus, NJ, Elaine has two brothers, Alex Michael and Anthony John.

Philcom said that any person of Filipino descent graduated from college in school year 2003-2004 as summa cum laude, magna cum laude or cum laude that might have been missed by the organization’s outreach efforts may call Philcom Center to be included in the awards ceremony.

‘Songs of Leyte’ at NY int’l film fest’


NEW YORK, November 2, 2004 --- Filipino-American director Eli Africa will be at the 2004 New York International Independent Film and Video Festival as his short film “Selling Songs of Leyte” has been officially selected to compete in the Documentary category.

The film is about “Ta’bo” or market day in the province of Leyte where local residents get their basic needs. Among a few of the dried fish vendors, wares are sold using the rhythm of the songs they sing.

The world premiere of “Selling Songs of Leyte” will be on Nov. 13, 2 p.m., at the Village East Cinema.

However, during the festival, which will run from Nov. 11 to Nov. 22, Africa’s film will only be shown once.

“Selling Songs of Leyte” is in Waray with English subtitles. It runs 14 minutes, in color.

Castillo named PAFCOM overall chairperson

JERSEY CITY --- Helen Castillo, an active Filipino-American leader, was named on Oct. 20 the new overall chairperson of the Philippine American Friendship Committee, Inc. (PAFCOM).

Members of PAFCOM, an organization that aims to unite and empower the Filipino community, unanimously voted Castillo.

Other elected officers of PAFCOM include Rosalinda Rupel, recording secretary; Ellen Alonzo, corresponding secretary, William Pineda, treasurer; Jean Baylon, assistant treasurer; Mely Corpuz, auditor; and Saylani Austria, public relations officer.

Lita Peńa is the chairperson of PAFCOM nomination and electoral committee.
