NEW YORK, March 4, 2005 --- In a bid to strengthen the voice of Asian Americans, a new political group headed by former Congressional candidate Filipino-American Jun Policarpio was established in New York.
The New York State Asian American Republican Coalition (NYAARC), was launched last Feb. 24 to empower Asian Americans.
Aiming to promote the interests of Asian Americans by working to elect Asian Americans in government posts, the group would also push for projects that would support the rights of Asian Americans.
“I feel it’s a great challenge and opportunity to fulfill my responsibility as a leader of this political group. Our main focus is political empowerment,” said Policarpio. The new group is also authorized to raise funds for candidates as it is a 527 tax exempt organization.
Policarpio, who lost in Congressional elections for the 5th district of New York last November is still optimistic that he could win the next election if he could raise enough campaign funds.
Policarpio said the new-established group would also campaign to register more Asian Americans as Republicans. “We will also locate qualified Asian Americans to run for public office,” he added.
“Our goal is to speak in one voice and thus strengthen our influence, which has been neglected in comparison to the country’s established mainstream communities,” NYAARC said.
In its founding meeting, Policarpio was elected as chairman of NYAARC. Other officials are Xujei Wong, vice chair and executive director. Wong, an immigrant from Shanghai, is a lawyer and legal counsel of the US-China Chamber of Commerce. The board also elected Tran Dinh Truong, a hotelier and philanthropist, as treasurer, Gloria Hutcherson, a senior officer of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank in Long Island , as secretary. Other members of the boarda are: Kwangsik Kim, journalist and president of the Korean American Association of Flushing; rev. Wilson Jose, head of South Asian Republican group in Nassau County’ Bishop Arnold Cabalquinto, of Queens, James Prescott Chue, vice president of the Chinatown Republican Club and president of the New York City chapter of the 80-20 Republican political action committee; Dr. Elaine Nguyen, Charles Wang, former president of China Institute, and director of Chinatown Planning and vice chair of the US Commission on Civil Rights.
The group’s officers will be sworn in this April in a ceremony in New York. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been invited to grace the ceremony to induct the officers. To show their oneness and support with Bloomberg, the group will endorse him for his re-election.
