SANDRA CUNNINGHAM: ‘GLENN LOVED GREG’
Wife of late Jersey City mayor backs
Greg Racelis’ candidacy

By Rita Villadiego

Friends, family and Sandra Cunningham show their support to Greg Racelis.

Jersey City, NEW JERSEY, April 28, 2005 --- As campaign for May 11 elections reaches its homestretch, Greg Racelis — the only Filipino-American candidate for the council in Ward B — got a big boost from Sandra Cunningham, the wife of the late Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham, as she met Racelis on Wednesday night to give her support.

“Glenn loved Greg. I certainly support Greg. Filipinos should have a representation in the city council. It’s time for Filipinos to have their presence in the council,” said Sandra Cunningham.

Cunningham added that if her late husband were alive, he would put Racelis on his own ticket.

“There should be diversity. This is a good opportunity for Greg,” she said, adding that Racelis was one of Cunningham’s strongest allies.

Racelis and Filipino-American organizations led by the Philippine American Friendship Day (PAFCOM) handed out $10,000 check to Cunningham to help her fund projects of the Sandra and Glenn Cunningham Foundation.

The check was collected from many Filipino-Americans and was originally intended to pay the flight of the Cunningham couple for a social and exposure trip to the Philippines. The trip was canceled due to security risks and when the mayor died last year, Racelis planned to give it to the mayor’s foundation.

Cunningham said her foundation intends to provide scholarships, initially, to 15 high school students this September. The students who will be accepted must be on C level. Cunningham explained that A and B students usually get a lot of scholarships but students with C grades don’t get anything. Through the scholarship, she wants to give opportunity to not so bright kids but willing to persevere to go to college.

Cunningham said she has plans to run and lead the city in the future but she didn’t not run in this year’s elections, saying it’s too soon and she’s still in the process of healing.

Racelis was elated with Cunningham’s support.

“I’d like to continue what the late mayor promised to do,” he said, pledging to continue Glen’s vision for Jersey City.

Racelis, who is a successful entrepreneur, said he is running for City Council because he has a realistic plan to improve the quality of life in Ward B.

His final salvo for the campaign is a caravan of vehicles to trumpet his candidacy. The caravan, to be held Saturday next week, needs approval from the city government.

If elected, Racelis promised to work for stable taxes, repair the area’s crumbling roads and sidewalks and to build affordable housing for seniors. He wants to fight for safer neighborhood by putting more police in the area and to create after school programs to help children succeed.

Racelis has a proven track record in government service and was the former chairman of the city’s housing authority and also served as former director and fiscal officer of the economic opportunity.

“Greg has been working and active in the community and I believe he would do a fine job,” said Cunningham.
