NY Madrigals to hold summer concert

NEW YORK, May 12, 2005 --- As part of their summer concert series, the New York Madrigal Ensemble will hold a concert on June 12, at St. John Nepomucene Church.

Sponsored by the Filipino Apostolate of the Archdiocese, the famous Madrigals will regale their audience with their unique rendition of best-loved Filipino folk songs such as Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, Dahil sa Iyo and Ili Ili Tulog Anay, and favorite pop songs like The Way You Look Tonight and The Greatest Love of All.

St. John Nepomucene Church is located on East 66th St. and First Avenue, New York City. The concert will start at 2:30 pm.

Edwin Santayana, a veteran of the famous UP Madrigals, serves as the music director and conductor of the new group that counts among its present members alumni of the UP Madrigals and American recruits, some with professional choral experience with the National Chorale.

The New York Madrgals Ensemble does its regular rehearsals at the Philippine Pastoral Center, offcial headquarters of the Filipino Apostolate located on East 62nd Street, which is the beneficiary of the concert.

Fil-Am gets Mabuhay Award

JERSEY CITY, May 12, 2005 --- The National Association of Filipino-Americans (NAFA) recently gave Monina Tan Latuja the Mabuhay Award as an outstanding Filipino community leader.

The award was presented by Rev. Gaudencio Soriano, NAFA president, during the 17th anniversary and coronation celebration of the organization held on April 16, at Step by Step, in Bergenfield, NJ.

Latuja is the chairperson of the Philippine Independence Ball celebrating the 107th Philippine Independence anniversary commemoration this year, scheduled for June 11, at the Hilton, New York.

She has been involved in social and civic organizations since the early 60s, and has already received numerous awards for her community services. Through her leadership as president of the Philippine American Communities Executive Council (PACEC), the organization donated $4,000 to the “Adopt a Classroom” project of the Philippine government being promoted here by the Philippine Consul General Cecilia B. Rebong.

For the last 26 years, Latuja chaired PACEC’s “Miss Philippines-USA” beauty pageant.

Latuja served as Grand Marshal during the Philippine centennial celebration in Jersey City. In 2002, she was also PAFCOM’s Ball chairperson during its Friendship Night.

Philippine Independence Festival set June 5 in DC

Washington, D.C., May 12, 2005 --- Promoting Philippine culture and centuries of relationship with the United States, an all-day Philippine Street Fair will be held near the Capitol on Sunday June 5, featuring a parade at 1 p.m., kicking off a month-long celebration of the Filipino American community.

The Philippine Street Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will include arts and crafts booths and a cultural show, in addition to the parade. The street fair is one of the events of Philippine Festival 2005, which includes a gala ball, an arts exhibit and a sports tournament. The annual festival celebrates the anniversary of Philippine independence. The Philippines was a former commonwealth of the United States.

Proceeds of the fair go to mainstream civic institutions and Philippine charity groups. The proceeds will be distributed by the Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Inc.(PAFC).

The fair is moving to a new, wider location in the nation’s capital this year. Formerly held on Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 10th and 12th streets, the festival will now take place at a new site on Pennsylvania Avenue between 3rd and 7th streets NW. Parking is no longer a problem.

Ms. Therese Lizardo, Miss District of Columbia 2004, is this year’s grand marshal. Ms.Lizardo, a Filipino American student at George Washington University School of Medicine, will be escorted by the Philippine ambassador to the United States, Albert Del Rosario.

Philippine handicrafts, sumptuous Philippine cuisine, gift items, interactive and informational booths and San Miguel beer will be available all day. Good products from the Philippines will be exhibited.

Among parade participants: the Aklan Ati-atihan group who will dance to the pulsating beat of drums. Cultural groups and representatives of Philippine regional minorities will showcase their indigenous music, dancing and colorful costumes.

Various Filipino-American organizations have been invited to march with their respective banners.

The parade will also feature a Santacruzan/Flores de Mayo religious and historical beauty pageant of the type held in many cities in the Philippines in May to commemorate the search for the Holy Cross by Queen Helena and her son, Emperor Constantine.

The street fair’s program will showcase ebullient dances, bright songs and a mini fashion parade featuring models and beauties in Philippine national costumes, as well as popular hip-hop groups such as the Culture Shock.
