A spectacular, realistic film, called “The Great Raid,” on the daring exploit that would liberate more than 500 U.S. “Prisoners of War,” in Cabanatuan ,and the heroism of Filipino soldiers, will be shown on July 24 at George Washington University in D.C.

The movie is a gripping depiction of human resilience, and it vividly brings to life the personal courage and audacious heroism that allowed a small but stoic band of World War ll soldiers to attempt the impossible in the hopes of freeing the captured soldiers.

The film stars Benjamin Bratt , Filipino actor Cesar Montano and other actors like Marton Csokas and Joseph Fiennes and other Filipino, American and Australian actors.

On Sunday evening, at 7 p.m, Filipino American WWII veterans, students and community leaders will have a special screening of the movie, thanks to the generosity of Miramax Films. Hosted by the students of the Philippine Cultural Society of the George Washington University and the leaders of the American Coalition for Filipino Veterans, the movie will be shown at the Marvin Student Center Continental Ballroom on 21st and H Streets, near the Foggy Bottom Metro.

Set in the Philippines in 1945, against the backdrop of war, this is the true story of the Sixth Ranger Battalion, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Mucci, as it undertakes a daring rescue mission.

Traveling 30 miles behind enemy lines, the battalion aims to liberate more than 500 American prisoners of war from the notorious Cabanatuan Japanese P.O.W. camp, in the most audacious rescue ever. The movie is based on the books “The Great Raid on Cabanatuan” by acclaimed military historian William Breuer and “Ghost Soldiers” by Hampton Sides.

The movie has been recreated with meticulous authenticity to give life to many different people, from U.S. commanders to Filipino soldiers to women workers to the POWs themselves, who played a part in turning this time of intense hardship into a moment of inspiration.

It will be shown in theaters on August 12. Students and seniors can watch it free on June 24th, but tickets are required. Individual donations of $10- $20 will be appreciated to defray reception expenses and refreshments for guests and veteran leaders attending the ACFV annual action leaders conference in Washington the following Monday.

HongKong Disney hires topnotch Filipino artists

MANILA --- Hongkong Disneyland has hired 116 topnotch Filipino artists and will hire more in the future, deputy administrator Carmencita Dimzon of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said.

Aside from ballet dancers and singers, Dimzon said skilled piping technicians were also employed.

“They’ve noticed that the Filipinos are really good,” she said of the theme park company, which is currently busy preparing for its grand opening in September.

She said Hongkong Disneyland has intended to get more Filipino artists in the future. “They did not want to commit to a certain number but they assured us that they will hire more in the future.”

Recently, Japan imposed stringent immigration laws in an effort to curb human trafficking which caused restrictions in opportunities for Filipino entertainers.

But Dimzon believed Japan and Hongkong offer different opportunities for Filipinos. She said Hongkong’s Disney “is good enough for our real entertainers.”

Visitors from China are forecast to make up 35 per cent of the estimated 5.6 million annual visitors to the Hongkong theme park, while the city’s residents will make up 33 per cent, with most of the rest coming from Southeast Asia.

Hongkong Disneyland is a joint venture between US entertainment giant Walt Disney and the former British colony. (MNS)
