PHIL Beduya closes his cell phone while he wipes the spots of sweat on his forehead. For a moment, he looks at his wristwatch and lets out a sigh of relief. Then he steps out of his Honda, retrieves a duffle bag from the compartment, and opens the bag full of concert tickets and flyers.
He then hands the tickets to a promoter who shakes his hand, mutters a few whispers then leaves. It’s just another day for Phil, the CEO of the entertainment production outfit known as Soundchecq, which will embark on its maiden venture into rock music on September 17, 2005 at the Fahrenheit Club in Downtown Manhattan.
The show, called “Staurday Night Live” will feature some of the top NY/NJ artists like Merkabah, Bleud, Hydrant, House of Straw, Jay Legaspi, John Flor Sisante, Sigh Robes and Ciello.
“There’s a lot of pain and sweat in this line of work, but it’s well worth everything”, he said.
Beduya always wanted to produce rock shows since pursuing a career in entertainment and he is positive that soon, he will be able to import Philippine-based rock acts to grace his shows.
Although a veteran in the club circuit, he never immersed himself into rock culture and thus became more famous as an R&B/Hip Hop impresario than a sweaty, leather-clad rock agent.
However, everybody gets a first time, and this Sept. 17 show will indeed be his first taste of a rock show.
In a scene striving to make its way into the mainstream, Beduya is a breath of fresh air, and brings with him the possibilities of a crossover.
More producers will produce more shows, which will be graced by more artists, which will eventually get the attention of more people and therefore might be able to tip the balance between obscurity and fame.
However, since this is Phil’s first rock production, he needs the public’s support. He needs to feel that his venture is really well worth the time and sacrifice. He need to know that Filipinos here in the east coast does support each other for the empowerment of the whole Fil-Am music scene.
Hence, the Filipino American community should all come out on the 17th to welcome this new player in our small but happy scene.

Jersey City, NEW JERSEY --- Senior citizens will delight in exercises that mix Tai-chi with ebullient folk dancing . Star dancers of Fandagorobics will share their knowledge on healthy movements for seniors. And young and old alike will have a chance to have free medical check-ups such as blood pressure screening, pediatrics, diabetes, paps smear/breast exam and colorectal and prostate cancer screening.
The Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League, Inc. (PACCAL) will hold its second Asian Health fair on September 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the City Council Chambers of City Hall.
“This is an opportunity for many Filipinos and Asians , who don’t have medical health insurance to have free check-ups,” said Linda Mayo, executive director of PACCAL.
She said a lot of new immigrants have no opportunity to work in big companies which offer medical coverage. Many of them work for small businesses and earning a meager income, making routine medical tests unaffordable.
Mayo said the event would also create awareness on the importance of being healthy for new immigrants.
There is a need to conduct regular check ups for immigrants because this sector is very vulnerable, mayo said, adding that most of them are working hard without health insurance .
Their anxiety of getting sick and stopping work has greater impact on their families and the community. For them, staying healthy is needed for productive economic lives.
Volunteer doctors and nurses will conduct the check-ups. Workshops on healthy eating, healthy living, the evils of HIV/AIDS and its prevention and awareness and skin damages and care will also be held.
The event is supported by the Jersey City Family Health Center, HIV/AIDS Planning Council, Horizon Health Center and Hyacinth Foundation, New Jersey Office of Minority Multicultural Health and Senior Services. Other sponsors are: Office of the Mayor, City Council of Jersey City and The office of business administration.
