THE Philippine Chamber Rondalla of New Jersey (PCR-NJ) provided warmly appreciated music during the September 29 Barrio Fiesta-style reception hosted by Philippine Ambassador Lauro L. Baja, Jr., Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
The affair marked the end of the Philippines’ historic month-long presidency of the Security Council. Over 300 diplomats, officials of the United Nations Secretariat, and members of the Filipino community attended the affair held at the Ambassador’s Manhattan residence.
Reception guests expressed full appreciation of the music the group provided from its repertoire of Philippine folk songs in richly harmonized arrangements for chamber by Bayani Mendoza de Leon.
A lot of the guests lingered to listen, applaud, and ask questions about the music, the instruments, and the group. The music fully complemented the typical barrio fiesta atmosphere during the reception.
The PCR-NJ is an ensemble of dedicated musicians bound by a love of rondalla music. Based in Central New Jersey, the group endeavors to propagate Filipino culture through the rondalla instruments.
It seeks to foster appreciation of the vibrant musical traditions of the Philippines through performances in concerts, ethnic gatherings, and outreach programs.
Current members are Elmer Camba, Cordelia Gow, Noel Gendrano, Marie Pablacio, Clarita Ramos, Amiable Ybasco, and Flordeliza Yalong.
For more information and interest in joining the group, call Tarit Ramos (908 359-3297), Flor Yalong (973 716-6886), Amy Ybasco (732 594-1021), or send an e-mail to philchamberrondalla@yahoo.com.

Jersey City, NEW JERSEY --- The Asian American Legal Project (AALP)’s series of legal clinics addressing the immigration needs of Asian Americans in Jersey City will return to the Filipino community.
The AAAP legal clinics in Jersey City will focus on helping Filipinos with their immigration problems.
Initiated by law students at Rutgers School of Law-Newark, AALP is a joint effort of the United Community Development Corporation of New Jersey (United CDC-NJ) and the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF).
The next legal clinic will be on October 25 at 6:00 pm. at the office of the Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League (PACCAL) at 618 Newark Avenue, Suite 104, Jersey City, NJ 07306.
The idea for AALP and the clinics was born in the spring of 2004, when students from Rutgers School of Law–Newark decided to explore how they could utilize their legal training to benefit the Asian American community in New Jersey.
The students conducted research in Jersey City to determine the legal concerns of Asian Americans in Jersey City.
“Despite the large number of Asian Americans in Jersey City, we discovered that they face major linguistic and cultural barriers when they seek legal help,” said Hemant Wadhwani, president of United CDC-NJ. The research also uncovered immigration as the most immediate and pressing issue among Jersey City’s Asian Americans.
Filipinos in Jersey City were found to be a community badly in need of legal service, especially in the area of immigration.
“We are very excited to return to the Filipino community this semester. We have received a tremendous amount of support from Filipino community leaders and we look forward to working with them to help serve their community,” said Monica Seth, staff member at AALP.
“On October 25th, AALP will be providing free legal service to the Filipino community,” said Seth. AALP will have bilingual law students working alongside attorneys. Clients will have access to free half-hour legal consultations, with students interpreting for lawyers.
Clients will also benefit from seminar given by an AALP staff member on an issue that pertains to a piece of upcoming immigration legislation at the state or federal level.
The Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League (PACCAL), the Philippine American Friendship Committee, Inc. (PAFCOM), and the International Institute of New Jersey (IINJ) have all let AALP use their facilities for AALP’s clinics.
In those clinics, AALP has advised 40 clients, conducted four immigration legislation seminars, and informed 53 clients of their immigration status.
