300 accountants attend convention

Atlantic City, NEW JERSEY --- Delegates and registered guests from 11 chapter organizations all over North America converged on the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center, Atlantic City, September 2-5 for the 19th Convention of the National Council of Philippine American Canadian Accountants (NCPACA).

The convention site is only a couple of blocks away from the famous Boardwalk along the beach and is surrounded by a number of the largest casinos of the city.

The convention featured several technical sessions on the Enron-instigated U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley Act, forensic accounting and auditing techniques, as well as NCPACA’s business sessions. A 5-member expert panel on SOX sat in to field questions on the legislation. Members of the panel were: Ed Ortiz (PCPA-Chicago), Julito Longkines (AFCA-Toronto), Cesar Castaneda (FAACPA-Seattle), Marc Bernardo (AFAA-NY), and Rene Enriquez (AFAA-NY).

The biennial elections, which occurred during this year’s convention, resulted in the election of the new set of officers to serve for the next two years until the 2007 convention.

Elected into office are: President-Al Maglan (PICPA-USA, San Francisco), Executive Vice President-Lolita Gillberg (AFAA-NY), External Vice President-Winston Lim (AFCA-Toronto), Internal Vice president-Jess Ocampo (TSPACPA-Houston), Secretary-Nanie Enriquez (PASCPA-LA), Treasurer-Bobby Tamayo (AFAI-Washington, DC), Auditor-Tony Paz (FAACPA-Seattle), and PRO-Art Dilay (PCPA-Chicago).

Also, nine new members were inducted into the distinguished Board of Councilors, namely: 030-Art Dilay (PCPA-Chicago), 031-Winston Lim (AFCA-Toronto), 032-Noemi Santos (PSCPA-LA), 033-Erlinda Leyva (FAACPA-Seattle), 034-Christina Banagan (AFAI-Washington, DC), 035-Anthony Paredes (AFAA-NJ), 036-Angelo Bachini (AFAI-Washington, DC), 037-Frank Aquino (AFCA-Toronto) and 038-Nancy Navarro (AFAA-NY).

The new Governor for the Board of Councilors is Carmelita O’Neil of PASCPA-LA.

AFAA-NY won the first place trophy during the hotly contested Paligsahan Talent Night Skit competitions, with FAACPA-Seattle taking second, and AFCA-Toronto placing third. During the Gala Night Dinner, the AFCA-Toronto group presented an elegant Royal Waltz dance to the delight of the audience.

The sites for the next two conventions were selected, being San Francisco for 2006 and Toronto (Niagara Falls) for 2007, to be hosted by the PICPA-USA, San Francisco, and the AFCA-Toronto chapters, respectively.
