San Lorenzo Ruiz Chapel blessing set

THE San Lorenzo Ruiz Chapel in downtown Manhattan will have its formal blessing on November 20 with a Mass at 12:30 pm.

The chapel was designated Chapel for Filipinos by New York City Archbishop, Edward Cardinal Egan.

The church is located at 378 Broome St., between Mulberry and Mott Streets in Little Italy, downtown Manhattan.

After the Mass, a reception in honor of San Lorenzo will be held, sponsored by Elma Santander of the Jersey City-based Philippine Bread House.

Fr. Erno Diaz, director of the San Lorenzo Ruiz Church, also announced the schedule of Masses at the Chapel.

Below is the schedule:

Weekday (Monday to Friday): 12:10 pm (in English);

Sunday: 12:30 pm (English-Filipino); 2:00 pm (Special Filipino Mass);

Saturday: 5:00 pm (anticipated).

The San Lorenzo Chapel is also open for special occasions and celebrations such fiestas, anniversaries, memorial masses, weddings and baptisms.

In late September, hundreds of Filipino Americans gathered in the chapel to unveil.

The statue of San Lorenzo Ruiz, with Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo herself gracing the occasion.

Ms. Arroyo led the prayer to San Lorenzo Ruiz and asked the first and only Filipino saint to be the country’s protector and to take care of Filipinos living in the US and abroad.

San Lorenzo was a Filipino-Chinese, a priest acolyte who was falsely accused of crimes in Manila. His life was in danger and decided to join the Spanish missionaries in Japan to propagate Christian faith in Asia.

In Japan, he was tortured, beaten and hanged to death by Japanese who persecuted Christians. But he remained strong and never gave up his faith up to his last hour.

People who were touched by his miracles, claimed they had been cured from cancer by praying to him. He was beatified as saint by the late Pope John Paul II in Rome in 1997.
