Filipino nurses to hold international conference

NEW YORK --- The Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) and Philippine Nurses Association, Inc. (PNA) will jointly hold a three-day international conference beginning January 25 at the Sheraton Hotels and Resorts Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii to share their views and experiences on the nursing profession.
Honolulu was aptly selected to be the venue of the Filipino nurses’ conference in light of the centennial celebration of Filipino migration to Hawaii.

Distinguished and internationally renowned leaders, educators and researchers will share their knowledge and expertise on how global partnership can improve and enhance healthcare. Continuing education credit will be given by the PNAA Foundation to attendees after full completion of the program.

The conference aims to identify positive strategies that impact global healthcare; discuss issues, trends and future directions in global care; and enhance professional contributions through sharing of creative ideas in leadership, clinical research and education arenas.

Discussions on the first day of the conference will focus on various issues relating to the migration of nurses. Among the speakers on the first day are the following: Barbara Blakeney, American Nurses Association President; Lucille Joel, Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools President; Mila Velasquez, PNAA President; Ruth Padilla, PNA (Manila) President, Milabel Ho, PNA Board Chair, Annabelle Borromeo and Marilyn Lorenzo of PNA.

New York-based immigration attorney, Reuben S. Seguritan, will discuss the legal perspectives of global migration on the first day of the conference.

The second day of the conference will focus on developing leadership and competencies among nurses. The second-day speakers include Wilhelmina Manzano, New York Presbyterian Hospital Chief Nursing Officer (CNO); Cathy Rick, Veterans Health Administration CNO, Carmelita Divinagracia, Dean UERMMMC College of Nursing, Josefina Tuazon, Dean UP College of Nursing, Amy de la Paz, Executive Director, PNAA, Andrea Cooper and Luz Porter, PNAA.

The last day of the conference will be devoted to clinical updates of relevance to the nursing profession in the US. Speakers on the last day of the conference are Jaime Galvez Tan, M.D., National Institute of Health Executive Director; Betty Smith Williams, National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurses Association President; Rey Rivera, Senior Director of Nursing, Brooklyn Hospital and Leda Layo-Danao, Senior Research Scientist, UCLA.

The conference planning committee for this event is composed of PNAA President Mila C. Velasquez; PNA President Ruth Padilla; Reynaldo Rivera and Perry Francisco, Chair and Co-Chair, respectively, of the PNAA Education Committee; and Peter Calixto, Chairperson of the PNAA Foundation Education Committee.

It also includes Hawaii chapter hosts: Tina Salvador, Emily Ramones, Tessie Oculto, Aggie Pigao-Cadiz; Hawaii Centennial Commission: Elias Beniga and Eddie Agas; and Philippine committee members: Victoria Ramon, Milabel Ho and Carmelita Divinagracia.

RP ambassador to swear in “dual citizenship” Pinoys

Chicago, ILLINOIS --- Filipino Americans from Florida will be sworn in by Philippine Ambassador to the US Albert F. del Rosario as dual citizens during the two-day fourth biennial convention of the Southern Region 4 chapter of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations on Jan. 21 and 22 in Tallahassee, Florida.

Dr. Joy Bruce and Alfred Gilo, NaFFAA region 4 chairman emeritus and NaFFAA Bay County, Florida chair, respectively said among the guest speakers during the convention at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center will be US Sen. Bill Nelson, (Dem.-Florida), a former astronaut, and civic leader Bobby M. Reyes, chairman of Kalayaan (Independence) 2006 Celebration in Los Angeles, California. Mayor John Marks of Tallahassee will deliver his welcome/special remarks to conferees while Florida Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist will be the keynote speaker at the Gala night on Jan. 21.

Meanwhile, Loida Nicolas Lewis, NaFFAA national chair, has been campaigning to invite Filipinos and Filipino Americans to attend the 7th National Empowerment Conference and 4th Global Networking Convention from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 this year in Honolulu, Hawaii to mark the Centennial of the Filipino Migration in Hawaii.

Among the topics that will be discussed at the Tallahassee convention are: “The Filipino Veteran’s Equity Act, HR 302, “ “Empowerment Through Advocacy,” and “Building Community/Cultural Centers” during the convention which will revolve around this year’s theme: “Strengthening Alliances Through Advocacy.”

The panel of speakers includee Pat Ganio, President of ACFV; Dr. Ernie Ramos, FL NaFFAA State Chair; Senator Nelson for Panel One, with Val Dagani, President of CFAO moderating.

The Advocacy Panel is composed of Belinda Keiser, Vice Chancellor, Keiser College; Nora Perron, Pres of AFRWBC & FARBC; Dr. Arneil Reyes, Director of CMNMR Program, FSU; while Dr. Jeffrey Milligan, Prof of History, FSU & Author will moderate.

The 3rd panel will be presented by Jesse Mabellos, State NaFFAA Chair, North Carolina; Conrado Gutlay, Pres of Phil American Center, AND Georgia State NaFFAA chair; Claire Ick, Founder & First Pres, PCFI; Joey Omila, Exec Director, BAC. Dr. Joy Bruce, Founder, Pres & CEO of NANAY will serve as Moderator.

Only those who complied with the requirements shall be sworn as dual citizens during the convention, which will be followed by a forum on dual citizenship by Minister & ConGen Jocelyn Batoon-Garcia and Consul and Atty. Rico Fos.

Filipina nurse inducted as International Nurse Leader

NEW YORK --- Edelia de Venecia-Mendoza RN, MSN, was among the 37 International Nurse Leaders from the United States, Bulgaria, Canada, Finland, Jordan, Scotland and Thailand who were inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society on Friday, November 11, 2005 at the 38th Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In addition, 10 individuals were inducted as honorary members in recognition of their commitment to Global Health and the nursing profession.

The notable honorary members included Dr. Richard H. Carmona, Surgeon General of the United States; Louis Stokes, Retired US Congressman from Ohio; Diane Carlson Evans, founder of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial in Washington; Masato Tsukahara, Dean of Yamaguchi University, Japan; R. Ernest Waaser, President of Hill-Rom; and John and William Wright, sons of Mary Tolle Wright, one of the founders of Sigma Theta Tau among many others.

Dr. Dan Pesut, President of the Honor Society of Nursing, lead the induction ceremony along with Nancy Dickerson-Hazard, Chief Executive Officer; Carol Huston, President-Elect and Carol Picard, Incoming President.

The Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing was founded in 1922 by six nursing students at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses in Indianapolis , Indiana.

Sigma Theta Tau International is dedicated to improving the health of people worldwide by increasing the scientific base of nursing practice. Members are nursing scholars committed to the pursuit of excellence in clinical practice, education, research and leadership.

More than 360,000 nurse scholars have been inducted into Sigma Theta Tau. With 125,000 active members, it is the second largest nursing organization in the world.

Members are active in more than 90 countries and territories, and the 431 chapters are located on 515 college and university campuses in the U.S. and countries including Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Hongkong, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, South Africa, Swaziland, Taiwan, Tanzania and many others.

Edelia was invited to the Honor Society as a Nurse Leader exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing. She has over 35 years experience as a Registered Nurse (Clinical Practice, Education, Administration) in the Philippines, Canada and United States.

She is currently working as a senior staff nurse at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical Center, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Nursing at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.

UPAANJ kicks off 2006 with seminar and election

THE University of the Philippines Alumni Association, New Jersey will conduct a seminar on “Harnessing U.P. Alumni Resources: A call to Listen and To Lead” on Sunday, January 22, 2006. The seminar, which will eun from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, will be held at the Hilton Woodbridge, 120 Wood Avenue South, Iselin, New Jersey.

The seminar will identify the current situation of the University of the Philippines and its role in preparing its students to become competitive in the current global economy.

Specifically, the seminar will focus on projects that will make a difference not only in the Philippines but also in the alumni’s respective local communities here in the U.S.A.

Leo Legaspi, a volunteer for the Ayala Foundation is invited to speak on project GILAS (Gearing Up Internet Literacy and Access for Students) and how this project can challenge and utilize the resources of all UP alumni to help connect all Philippine public high schools to the internet within five years.

Efren Dato, a UPAANJ Board member and currently Deputy Director Economic Development in Franklin Township, New Jersey will speak on the importance of community volunteerism.

Ben Menor, a prominent community leader in San Jose California, and NAFFAA (National Federation of Filipino American Associations) National Director of Programs and Development, will talk on Servant Leadership and how it can prepare and utilize alumni talents and resources to better help the underserved Filipino population here in the U.S. and in the Philippines.

UPAANJ will elect its new set of officers after the seminar.

UPAANJ has been in existence for the past 25 years and has accomplished a lot of projects to benefit the University and its alumni in the Philippines, as well as its alumni here in the United States.

To date, the UPAANJ has maintained a scholarship fund for deserving students, which has provided full benefits to its scholars, such as free tuition, books and board and lodging, until the scholar graduates.

UPAANJ has also sponsored cultural programs showcasing the talents and artistry of prominent UP alumni such as the UP Concert Chorus, and the UP Alumni and Friends Rondalla, to mention a few. UPAANJ has also worked in partnership with various community organizations and with the Consulate General in New York on projects to alleviate poverty in the Philippines.
