Manila mayor at NY forum

NEW YORK --- Manila Mayor Lito Atienza spoke at a community forum for Filipinos and Filipino-Americans of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Philadelphia and others to discuss “The Future of Philippine PoliticsToday” at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center.

The forum, organized by the Alliance of Manila and Philippine Islanders SA, was held last May 10 at 7:30 pm.

The Philippine Center is located at 556 Fifth Avenue, between 45th and 46th Streets in Manhattan. Atienza has been very much in Philippine news lately for his political moves and views. He is now on his third and last three-year term as Mayor of the premier city of the Philippines.

Atienza has gained national popularity because of the numerous improvements he introduced to Manila over the seven years he has held the top office of the city.

In the last several years, former residents of Manila and the many foreign and domestic visitors who return to the city after being away for a time are amazed at the changes Manila has undergone. Even long-time residents are awed by many of these changes.

The most notable and admired of these is what has become known as Manila’s Baywalk, a stretch of Manila Bay oceanfront where Mayor Atienza had planted to palm trees along the wide concrete strip that serves both as a strolling strip and, on the bay side, are set with tables and chairs that serve as an al fresco dining mall for the many restaurant concessionaires the city has licensed to operate there.

Recently, the Liberal Party of the Philippines announced that Mayor Atienza is one of its official party candidates for Senator in the next national elections. Atienza is one of the more popular and powerful stalwarts of the Liberal Party being its Secretary General.

Iskwelahang Pilipino presents musical play

Cambridge, MASSACHUSSETTS --- Iskwelahang Pilipino (IP) will stage a production of “Tayo na. . . sa Antipolo” (Let’s go. . . to Antipolo), a two-part presentation of dances, music and acting, as the school’s 30th anniversary offering.

It will be held on June 24, 2006 at the Kresge Auditorium at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in this city.

IP’s Director, Cris Castro, said weekly rehearsals for the dances and rondalla have been going strong, with beautiful and colorful costumes also in production, some arriving directly from the Philippines. “Costume fittings and varied production activities like making replicas of the “Higantes of Angono” are keeping parents and other volunteers busy,” PattyYusah, language and culture teacher, said.

This “Pearl Anniversary” presentation incorporates the “Paalay Festival” and the “San Isidro/Carabao Festival”, she added.

It will be a festival of festivals with the traditional celebration of Mayflowers and celebration to honor the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage.

IP also has commissioned Filipino designers to help commemorate IP’s 30th anniversary with pearls. A limited number of IP Commemorative pearls are available to the public, single and double strand of south sea pearls, proudly Philippine made, by Filipinos. The necklaces are available by contacting Veronica Gominho at vgominho@comcast.net.
