Pinoy fashion show at the NY Consulate

THE Filipino American community and the everyday fashonistas in New York City will have the opportunity to witness firsthand the evolution of Philippine fabrics, when the Consulate General brings the creations of prominent Filipino fashion designers together in an exhibit called “Habi Filipina.”

“We are happy to host the members of the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines who bring the traditional baro’t saya, terno, and barong to new heights,” Consul General Cecilia Rebong said.

“We usually feature paintings - but this year being the Centennial of Filipino immigration to the United States, we wanted to do something extra special. The gallery will be full of luscious textiles in that visitors will be able to touch and feel.”

“We are very excited to participate in the festivities in New York, including the Philippine Independence Day Parade,” said Edgar San Diego, President of FDAP. Joining San Diego are couturiers Richard Papa, Edgar Madamba, Ronaldo Arnaldo,Gener Gozum,Tony Cajucom, Delby Bragais, Roland Lirio,Arielle Agasang,John Abul, Jonti Martinez and Raoul Ramirez.

In celebration of the 108th Anniversary of the Philippine Independence, the exhibit “Habi Filipina” may be viewed from June 4 – 16, 2006, weekdays 9am to 5pm at the gallery of the Philippine Center on 556 Fifth Avenue (bet. 45th St and 46th St.), New York City. Admission is free.

This exhibit is made possible in partnership with RCP Foundation, and the support of Seven Seven Softwares, Citibank, Western Union, Metrobank, Grill 21, Juno Healthcare.

Mini-barrio fiesta set for Rizal’s 145th Day

JERSEY CITY -- To commemorate the 145th birth anniversary of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, the Knights of Rizal New Jersey chapter will hold a mini-festival at the Rizal Plaza on June 17.

Lito Gajilan, NJ chapter commander of the Knights of Rizal, said the event would be far more elaborate than previous celebrations of Rizal Day.

Guests will be treated to a mini “barrio-fiesta” where guests can indulge in sumptuous Filipino delicacies and buy native products at bargain prices. There will be a cultural show, music and entertainment.

There will also be a forum wherein experts on Dr. Rizal will talk about the relevance of the national hero’s life and works in today’s Philippine society.

The Knights of Rizal will also give out free booklets, “The Youth is the Hope of the Country”, to children and youth who will attend the event. This booklet is dedicated to young Filipino Americans, to help them learn the values and teachings of Rizal.

“As we are one people, let us celebrate with pride and dignity the birth anniversary of this great Filipino whose works and whose tremendous love for our country have inspired us Filipinos to fight for our freedom,” said Gajilan.

The Rizal Day celebration also hopes to rekindle the spirit of nationalism and great love for country among Filipinos and Filipino Americans.

A special meeting in preparation for the mini-festival will be held on June 6 at Subic Restaurant along Route 440. Members of the Knights of Rizal and volunteersare encouraged to attend.

PAFCOM’s Filipino Idol audition set on June 3

THE Philippine-American Friendship Committee (PAFCOM) announces the search for 2006 Filipino Idol, a singing competition now in its fourth year of successful staging.

The winner is selected during the festival portion of the Friendship Day celebration to be held on June 25 at the Exchange Place Waterfront, Jersey City.

Audition will be held on June 3 at Subic Restaurant, Route 440, Jersey City at 2:00 pm. Overall chairman of the festivities is Araceli Miralles. The singing contest is a signature project of Hector Magno, vice chair of this year’s PAFCOM Festival.

Below are the contest rules:

1. The contest is open to Filipino-Americans, preferably between 16 to 35 years old. Send applications with a $15 check payable to PAFCOM and mailed to: Magno PI, 251 Foothill Rd, Bridgewater, NJ 08807. Indicate name, home address, e-mail, age, telephone #, and a brief bio-data.


2. Audition is set for June 3 at Subic Restaurant (Route 440, Jersey City) at 2 PM. Contestants must bring their own CD or minus one tapes.

3. A panel of judges will select finalists to compete at the June 25 Final. Judging criteria will include but not limited to, originality, presentation, voice quality and artistry.

4. At the June 25 Grand Final, finalists will sing two songs (1 Tagalog and 1 English) accompanied by a live band. It is imperative that CD or minus one tapes of the contest pieces be submitted ahead for the band to study. A one-time rehearsal with the band is necessary at a time and date convenient to the finalists.

5. Cash money and trophies will be awarded with the winner receiving $500 and named the 2006 Filipino Idol. Second and third placers will receive $300 and $200, respectively.

San Fo paper launches Podcast for Filipinos

SAN FRANCISCO, California – The San Francisco Chronicle announced on Tuesday, May 23, its launch of Pinoy Pod, a weekly program of interviews, news features and information about the Filipino experience in Northern California, the Philippines and beyond.

This bold experiment, the first of its kind by a major American newspaper, can be downloaded at www.sfgate.com/blogs/podcasts.

“The Pinoy Pod allows us to use multi-media technology to connect very powerfully The Chronicle/SFGate to the vibrant Filipino community here in the Bay Area, throughout the country and overseas,” said Phil Bronstein, editor of The Chronicle.

In addition to English, some episodes will be in Tagalog and other Philippine languages. Topics will include arts, culture, entertainment, business and political and social issues. Pinoy Pod’s 10- to 20-minute podcasts will be posted Tuesdays.

The Pinoy Pod crew includes some of The San Francisco Chronicle’s most experienced Filipino journalists: Deputy Managing Editor Leslie Guevarra, editorial writer and columnist Pati Poblete, podcast producer Benny Evangelista, business reporter and Pinoy Pod producer Ben Pimentel, reporter Cicero Estrella and copy editor Michelle Louie.

A podcast is similar to a radio show, except it’s in the form of a computer file that you download from the Internet and can listen to at your convenience. You can play a podcast on your computer or on a portable digital music player.

RP Jaycees slates coaching seminar

NEW YORK CITY – In cooperation with the Consulate General of the Philippines, the Philippine-New York Junior Chamber (Jaycees) invites the public to, a special coaching seminar, “Taking the Lead in Your Life”, on June 14, from 6:00 pm-9:00 p.m. at the Philippine Consulate’s Kalayaan Hall
