NEW YORK CITY--Jovy de la Paz and Begonietta “Be” Fernandez-Jensen were honored as two of New York’s Outstanding Adult Literacy Educators at the awarding ceremonies held at the Scholastic Auditorium on June 1.
Each year, the Literacy Assistance Center, in collaboration with Bookbinders’ Guild of New York and Scholastic, Inc., awards eight educators for outstanding achievement in the field of Adult Literacy.
Jovy de la Paz is English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Supervisor at Church Avenue Merchants Block Association (CAMBA). In addition to supervising the CAMBA ESOL program during the day, he teaches ESOL there weekdays at night.
On Saturdays, he teaches at the YMCA Adult Literacy Program in Greenpoint, Queens. On Sunday afternoons, he provides a free three-hour ESOL class at the All Nations Baptist Church of Woodhaven.
De la Paz began his career in education 41 years ago, teaching high school in the Philippines. He subsequently taught ESOL at the Philippine Refugee Processing Center in Bataan and grade school in the U.S.
For the past 16 years, Jovy has been working as an adult educator in New York City, where he has been recognized as one of the outstanding achievers in the education field by the Filipino Teachers Association of America.
De la Paz is also a published writer, an award-winning poet, and a playwright.
Be Fernandez-Jensen has dedicated 23 years to service for underserved immigrants and refugee communities. She began her career in 1982 at the Philippine Refugee Processing Center and arrived at the YMCA English Language and Employment Services for Adult Immigrants and Refugees (ELESAIR) Project in 1985 as an ESOL teacher.
When she became director in 1998, the program was considered a financial burden and on the verge of elimination.
Under Fernandez-Jensen, ELESAIR has not only survived but has grown from a small Manhattan-based English language program to a “one-stop assistance center” with many locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens YMCAs, offering classes for adult immigrants in literacy, ESOL, citizenship, life skills, and computers, along with employment services.
For the past 21 years, LAC has awarded seven Filipinos for their outstanding achievement in Adult Literacy. Previous awardees are Jaime Atienza, 1992; Francisca Pillazar, 2000; Nicol Miraflores, 2002; Milagros Milan, 2004; and Mary Ann Obfenda-Gottlieb, 2005.
