Fil Am cultural show set to raise scholarship fund

HILLSBOROUGH, New Jersey -- Samahang Pilipino: Coalition of Filipino-Americans in Central New Jersey will host a cultural show featuring traditional Filipino dances and songs on Friday, November 10 at Soriano’s Parkside Banquet Hall in Bridgewater, New Jersey.

Proceeds of the event will go towards the creation of the Samahang Pilipino Scholarship Fund.

The cultural show aims to raise awareness among the Filipino-American community about the increasing number of impoverished Filipino children who cannot afford a proper education.

The scholarship fund will provide tuition assistance to gifted and talented students who otherwise might not be able to pay for their education. Through partnerships with various schools and local organizations in the Philippines, Samahang Pilipino hopes to grant scholarships to several students in elementary schools, high schools, and universities.

“Education provides a very strong foundation for a child’s future success,” said Myralyn Supetran, the show’s choreographer and coordinator. “Through the Samahang Pilipino Scholarship Fund, we seek to improve the lives of bright and promising children who, in turn, can someday help improve the lives of their families.”

The cultural show’s title, Pagdiriwang, means “celebration” in the Filipino language. True to its name, the show promises to be a grand showcase of Filipino culture at its best. More than 20 members of the Samahang Pilipino Dance Troupe will perform beloved cultural dances such as the tinikling, binasuan, sayaw sa bangko, subli, maglalatik, and pandanggo sa ilaw.

Samahang Pilipino: Coalition of Filipino-Americans in Central New Jersey is a volunteer organization that began in November of 2005. Its mission is to increase awareness of Filipino history and culture in the United States and help the poor and needy in the Philippines. Little Barangay to open language, culture classes

NEW YORK CITY – Beginning October 14th, Little Barangay will offer its Fall Session class on Filipino language and culture for school-age children at Manhattan’s PS 2.

With a curriculum developed with an accredited enrichment program director and bicultural curriculum planner from the University of Pennsylvania, the upcoming session will focus on the centennial anniversary of Filipinos’ “mass” arrival in the United States.

The class will study the reasons for Filipino migration and discuss various Filipino contributions to the American society. In addition, basic Filipino vocabulary as well as Filipino children’s literature that deals with the Filipino-American story will be covered in class.

The tuition cost is $90 for the entire course and will simply cover administrative expenses. Discounts of $10 are applicable for siblings as well as individuals who refer new families to the Little Barangay class. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Despite the large number of Filipinos and Filipino-Americans living in the greater New York metropolitan area, there are currently no long-term classes available for school-age children that educates them about the distinct Filipino cultures, languages, and history in a formal institutionalized fashion.

Since its introduction last year, Little Barangay has received coverage and accolades from established media entities like ABS-CBN’s Balitang Amerika and The New York Times-owned Boston Globe.
