Red Cross asks for aid for victims of Milenyo

THE magnitude of the damage brought by typhoon Milenyo is worse than what the Philippine National Red Cross originally expected.

Based on the reports of PNRC local chapters and assessment teams deployed to hardest-hit areas of Sorsogon, Laguna, Albay, Camarines Sur and Quezon, there are at least 70,000 families who lost their homes and 189,000 whose homes have been severely damaged because of the typhoon.

With no means of livelihood, and with only a few possession in their hands, the affected families urgently need assistance. These people, identified by the PNRC to be among the poorest of the poor, are unfortunately still mired in deep suffering and poverty.

It will take at the very least PhP 420 million to cover the emergency needs alone of the 70,000 homeless. This amount will only cover the cost of standard relief packages that will tide them over for a week, and non-food items including hygiene kits, blankets, mosquito nets, and charcoal stove, among others.

As the premier humanitarian organization in the country, the PNRC aims to provide relief assistance to 25,000 beneficiaries – or 1/3 of the 70,000 most vulnerable.

This would require us to shell out more than P150 million, and to date, it has only raised P11 million.

As a rsult, the PNRC is appeling to the public for donations.

Call 527-0000 or visit www.redcross.org.ph. The Philippine National Red Cross is ready to receive your donation.
