JERSEY CITY – In a move to create an advocate for Filipino-American business owners in the sprawling New Jersey urban center,a group of Jersey City businessmen and women formed the Jersey city FilAm Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber was formed to foster camaraderie and cooperation among Filipino-American business owners in Jersey City and surrounding communities.
Chamber members drafted what they called Articles of Unity to pursue certain objectives including serving as a voice for the Filipino-American in matters of commerce, industry and development, and serving as a forum for social interaction and discussions of legal, financial and economic issues affecting the business interest of the members.
The founding members are Isagani Morales of Topnotch Electronics, Victor Sison of Sison Law Offices, Elvira Quiray of Elcan Realty, Al Cadenilla of IT Solutions Group, Rollie Unarce of JRK Business Services Inc., Lito Amores of Seromaspeed Customs Cycle, Tony Figueroa of Ameritax, Ellie Esguerra of Homeowners Realty, Fil Salvo of Slavo Group Inc., Edwin Solano of Topnotch Realty, Gerry Austria of American Foodmart, Sonny Ramirez of Ramz Telecom, Angel Florentino of ANFLO Realty, and Benrome Abao of Homebuyers Mortgage.

NEW YORK CITY -- Around 350 Filipino Americans converged in Queens over the weekend to attend a national conference of Filipino Americans organizations that banded together to launch a national alliance designed to address the various issues affecting the Filipino American community.
By the end of the two-day conference, the participants have agreed on a three-year general program of action and elected a new set of officers for the new alliance, the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON).
Some 30 organizations from 24 cities all over the US attended the conference, held at the Kalayaan Auditorim of the Philippine Forum in Elmhurst, Queens.
Of the participants, 30 came from outside New York and New Jersey. There were delegates from Chicago, IL; Portland, OR; Philadelphia, PA; Tampa, FL; Arlington, VA; Washington D.C.; Virginia Beach, VA; Silver Spring, MD; Seattle WA; Honolulu Hawaii; and Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, San Bernardo, among others, in California.
The new alliance agreed to address issues affecting the various sectors of the community such as seniors, youth, children, domestic workers, war veterans, professionals, etc.. The delegates also agreed to campaign for a more humane immigration laws in the US, among other issues.
Elected President is Fr. Benjamin Alforque, MSC. Rico Foz of the Philippine Forum-New Jersey is Executive Vice President. Other officers are: Farida Ali, secretary; Fr. Tony Abuan, treasurer.
Elected national vice presidents are: Nerissa Abuan- Allegretti; Bro. Julian Jagudilla, OFM; Robyn Rodriguez; Mara Mendoza and Julia Camagong. Robert Roy of the Philipine Forum is the national executive director while Nedo Valero is the group’s legal counsel.
Appointed national directors for sectoral and special concerns are: Lucy Burns, Academic and Scholars; Renia Gardner and Malaika Queano, children; Bishop Valentin Lorejo Jr., PIC, and Fr. Steve de Leon, SVD, church and faith-based; Ging Mascarenas and Eliseo Art Silva, artists;
Lorena Sanchez, domestic workers: Noilyn Abesamis, health; Potri Ranka Manis, indigenous and Bangsa Moro; Terry Valen, institutions and service providers; Adam Diaz, labor.
Cristina Godinez, lawyers; Noel Pangilinan, media; Yancy Padillo; LGBT: Berna Ellorin, Philippine Issues and Concerns: Dr. Expedito Castillo, Daisy Rodriguez, RN, MPA, professional; Fr. James Kollin: seafarers; Fely Camagong, seniors;
Gina Salao, solidarity relations; Paul Hipolito, veterans; Valerie Francisco, Anne Beryl Corotan, women; and Renee Carandang, Jane Razon, Steve Raga, Ivy Climacosa, youth.
Appointed members of the national advisory board were Dr. Orlando Apiado, Fr. Art Balagat, Dr. Benjamin Ileto and Fr. Dennis Legaspi.
