Dakila Awards search announced

THE Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Inc., in keeping with its mission of enhancing the lives of the Filipino-American community in the greater Washington, D.C. area, proudly announced the 2007 PAFC Dakila Achievement Awards.

The awards is a program that will select from the community’s nominations, outstanding men and women who represent the best examples of Filipino and Filipino American perseverance, drive and success.

Non-Filipinos may also receive the award if they have substantially contributed to the advancement and improvement of the Filipino American community. These outstanding individuals become role models and inspiration to all of us and leave a legacy behind that our youth could emulate.

Named after the Filipino word for ‘greatness’ the Dakila Award reflects the awardees’ outstanding contributions to the Filipino-American community and to the mainstream American community. It symbolizes the awardees’ innate qualities that have molded them into exemplary human beings. Awards will be given in the following areas: Arts & Culture, Business Leadership, Civic Leadership, Community Service, Education, Health Services, Writing & Journalism, Youth Leadership.

The awards will be presented at a Luncheon on Sunday, March 18, 2007 at the J.W. Marriott, Washington, DC.

The public is encouraged toto nominate an individual to be recognized for the 2007 Dakila Achievement Award, The group said.

Nominations form should be submitted at: PAFC Dakila Awards, 867 No. Madison St., Arlington, VA 22205.

All nominees should submit the form not later than February 10, 2007.

Madela concert to feature GK’s Wilk

DYLAN Wilk, the Gawad Kalinga (GK) International Partnership Director, is arriving in New York on Saturday, January 20, to grace the concert of Jed.

He is flying in after speaking engagements in Florida and North Carolina just in time for the concert in Lodi, NJ, after which he heads right back to Manila.

Wilk is the self-made British millionaire who gave up his business to devote his life to GK. He is married to the daughter of GK executive director Tony Meloto, Anna, whom he met while working on various projects of GK.

Madela is The 2005 Grand Champion of Hollywood’s World Championship of Performing Arts. Jed Madela in Concert: Champion for the Poor, is a project of BLD Trenton- Gawad Kalinga Project. It will be held at the John J. Breslin Theater, Felician College, 262 South Main St, Lodi, NJ, on Saturday, January 20, at 7:30 pm.

Admission is from $40 to $80.

In his previous speeches at the Philippine Consulate in New York in 2005, and at the San Francisco Consulate in August 2006, he spoke of the Filipino “bayanihan” spirit, whnich he said to him meant being heroes for one another.

“The Banaue Rice Terraces are, for me, the eighth wonder of the world because it was built by free Filipinos for each other in the spirit of bayanihan,” he said.

Jed Madela, whose full name John Edward Tajanlangit, is a member of Singles for Christ and a GK volunteer. His parents Roy And Agnes Tajanlangit (CFC coordinators in Iloilo City) will arrive with Jed on Jan. 19, with Jed’s road manager, uncle Vincent Andrew Tajanlangit.

Vincent is also the Bukas Loob sa Diyos (BLD) Iloilo Praise Coordinator. This benefit concert is a BLD-GK project of BLD-Trenton produced by its members, Rey and Sylvia Tajanlangit-Duma (Jed’s aunt), Drs. Vic and Connie Cipriaso, and Leo and Nona Alquiros, and Dr. Lito Fune.

He made history by sweeping all the top prizes in the categories he joined at the 2005 Grand Champion of Hollywood’s World Championship of Performing Arts in California, representing the Philippines.

Madela will fly back on Jan. 24 to make it in time for the Sunday “ASAP” show.

Search for ‘Diwa ng Kalayaan’ is on

NEW YORK – The Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI) announced the start of its search for the 2007 Diwa ng Kalayaan, to reign during the commemoration of the 109th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence.

The announcement was made by this year’s PIDCI Diwa ng Kalayaan Selection and Coronation Committee, chaired by Board Members Sevilla Belen Castillo, who is also the newly elected treasurer, and Gerry Austria, President of American Pinoy Food Mart. Diwa ng Kalayaan is one of the most coveted beauty titles in the northeastern United States.

The winning beauty will reign during the months-long celebration of the anniversary of Philippine Independence which culminates with the Independence Day Parade on June 3 and her presentation at the Independence Ball on June 9.

The Diwa ng Kalayaan is an age-old tradition that has lived almost as long as the Philippine Independence commemoration in New York, now on its 19th year. Candidates for Diwa ng Kalayaan must be Filipino ancestry, 16 to 21 years of age, with a height of five feet two inches (5’2”) or taller. Candidates must also send a biographical sketch along with a 4” x 6” half-body photograph.

Winner will receive a round trip to the Philippines (limit of up to $1,000) and will serve as PIDCI’s Ambassador of Goodwill. As Ambassador of Goodwill, the Diwa ng Kalayaan will represent PIDCI in all functions that may necessitate her presence, including charitable events in the tri-state area and/or the Philippines.
