Free legal clinic for Fil Ams set on Feb. 15 in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY — The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund’s New Jersey Asian American Legal Project (NJ-AALP) announced that its next free monthly clinic for the Filipino American community will be on the evening of February 15.

Individuals who would like to receive free, confidential legal advice regarding their immigration and employment law questions must contact the Philippine American Friendship Committee (PAFCOM) at (201) 332-4711 to secure an appointment.

The legal clinic will be held at the office of the Philippine American Friendship Committee at 176 Mallory Avenue, Jersey City, NJ.

NJ-AALP has hosted several clinics in the Asian American community in Jersey City over the past two years. With help from several Asian American community organizations, there has been a tremendous turnout from the community at each of the clinics.

Said NJ-AALP Director and attorney Alex Saingchin: “We have received a groundswell of response from the Filipino American community at our recent clinics, and have decided to now hold them regularly so that area residents have a place to turn to for free and reliable legal advice year-round.”

Future legal clinics will be held on the third Thursday of each month: Thu. March 15, Thu. April 19, Thu. May 17, and Thu. June 21.

The New Jersey Asian American Legal Project is an initiative of the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund designed to address the unmet legal needs of the Asian American community in New Jersey.

Mangyan girl needs surgery

MIRALE, a seven-year old Mangyan girl, needs help. She was diagnosed to have a congenital heart disease in 2005.

She is suffering from a condition known as tetralogy of fallot, and it would require an open surgery to correct her condition.

Mirale is among the Mangyan children who are under the care of the Nangka Mangyan Tribal Community in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro.

Mirale lives with her aunt, since last year, when her mother killed herself. Mirale unfortunately saw her mother hang herself and die.

Her father is jobless. She has a younger sister.

She was brought to a public hospital in Mindoro in 2005 but her condition was n ot diagnosed properly. It was only much later, when she was brought to a private doctor that it was found out that she was suffering from a congenital heart disease.

Several groups are helping her raise funds for her surgery and other needs.
