PDOC holds 2007 Grand Marshals, Coronation Night Gala

THE Philippine Day Organizing Council (PDOC) will once again honor the paragons of the Filipino community with its 2007 Grand Marshals and Coronation Night Gala, to be held on April 21, 2007, 6 p.m at Each year, the PDOCLa Quinta Inn and Suites in Secaucus, New Jersey.

PDOC also bestows the honor of Grand Marshal on meritorious individuals who have significantly contributed to the dignity and productive growth of Filipinos residing in the United States. These pillars of the community will be feted in this important event prior to assuming their seat of honor at PDOC’s Philippine Day parade, where their visibility will serve as a beacon of inspiration to spectators.

La Quinta Inn and Suites is located at 350 Route 3 West at Mill Creek Drive Secaucus, New Jersey.

This year’s deserving individuals are Nanding and Mila Mendez, who head Special Edition Press, Inc., a dynamic multi-media and event production company dedicated to spearheading events aimed at bringing the Filipino community together. To date, the organization has produced several hit concerts that have featured leading recording artists and entertainers from the Philippine Islands. But what really makes Special Edition Press, Inc. shines is the Annual Philippine Fiesta in America event held every August at the Meadowlands Expo Center, which infuses a grand cultural celebration of Filipino heritage with a trade exposition aimed at uplifting small and large scale Filipino businesses.

A couple born to achieve, Nanding is a multi-awarded advertising art director with over 30 years of experience in the advertising and graphic arts field before founding Special Edition Press, Inc. Mila likewise hails from the advertising field, and is an active community leader, involving herself in many organizations from New York and New Jersey. In the past, she also served as a Community Partnership Specialist for the Bureau of Census and sat in the Philippine Pastoral Center Board of Directors.

The evening also aims to honor Councilman Gerardo Fernandez as an Honorary Grand Marshal in recognition of his significant achievements in community leadership for which the Filipino community is grateful.

The event will also highlight the Coronation Night featuring: Mrs. Jocelyn Verzosa, Mrs. Philippine Day; Reena Aquino, Miss Philippine Day; Marjoan Osdon, Miss Mutya and Mia Rodrigues, Little Miss Philippine Day.

Seniors’ Mrs Valentine to be crowned Feb. 24

THE Seniors Club of Jersey City is holding a dinner-dance on February 24 at St. Paul Church social hall at 14 Bergen Ave., Jersey City.

A Mrs. Valentine’s will be crowned during the event.

Rosita Merciadez, president of Seniors Club, said they wanted seniors to be active through ballroom dancing. They have started a monthly dinner-dance to exercise the dancing muscles of seniors and provide them a hobby and healthy activities.

The event is also a fund-raising campaign. Each member or attendee pays $5 at the party. Proceeds of the dance will go to sick seniors to help them buy food or medication.

Seniors Club help members to be involved in community projects that ensure maximum participation of seniors for healthy aging. The association is like a support group that allows seniors to talk, share experiences and enjoy togetherness through activities and meetings.

Aside from Merciadez, its new set of officers for 2007-2008 are : Bert Faustino, vice president, Sally Carungay, 2nd vice president; Bing Antonio, secretary; Lydia Te, assistant secretary; Helen Santillan, assistant recording secretary; Zeny Valerio, corresponding secretary, Fe Rmirez; assistant corresponding secretary; Belen Comingo, business manager; Aurora Carbonell, treasurer; Rose Contreras, assistant treasurer; and Narcio Merciades, auditor.

Its advisers are Pat Berberabe, Ninoy Domingo and Emi Villanueva. Other officers are Conrado Bate, Restie Valerio , and Jess Casimiro.

“The event is also a fund-raising to help seniors who are sick,” said Berberabe.
