The Apo Hiking Society has entertained its way through three decades of Philippine history, indeed, becoming undisputed icons of Philippine entertainment. The astounding trio of Danny Javier, Jim Paredes and Boboy Garovillo never fails to inspire and entertain with their songs, many of which have become the defining anthems of different generations, making them popular with both young and old.
Indeed, the span of their compositions is nothing short of legendary: their repertoire ranges from unforgettable songs about childhood (“Batang Bata Ka Pa” – Still a Child), love (“Show Me a Smile”), enchantment (“Hiwaga” - Mystery), music (“True to My Music”), and friendship (“Awit ng Barkada” – Anthem of Friends) to immortal hits such as the defining tune of the EDSA Revolution: “Handog ng Pilipino Sa Mundo” (English version – “A New and Better Way”).
The Apo’s track record is matchless - having appeared in countless shows, wowing crowds all over the world, always leaving behind them a lingering memory of the superb artistry of the Filipino. Their television shows “Sa Linggo nAPO Sila” and “Sang Linggo nAPO Sila” were staples of 90s viewing, offering a better alternative to noontime variety shows. Their albums are-and always have been-certified hits, paving the way for the advancement of indigenous Filipino hits lovingly termed Original Pilipino Music (OPM). Recently, a group of some of the most popular young Filipino recording artists including Kitchie Nadal, Sponge Cola, Barbie Almalbis, Itchyworms, Parokya ni Edgar, and many others paid tribute to the trio by rendering interpretations of the Apo’s greatest hits in a compilation album. The album was a phenomenal success, proving that The Apo’s magic will continue to live on.
