Phil-US Expo Honors 9 Community Leaders

EDISON, N,J, -- At the 3rd Philippine-US Expo held recently, the 2007 Topnotch Community Outreach Awards, the first ever handed out, were presented to nine individuals by Topnotch Electronics/ Janmar USA in recognition of the excellence and commitment they have exhibited that have made an impact to the Filipino-American community.

Philippine Consul General of New York Cecilia Rebong and the Edison Mayor, Korean-American Jun Choi, along with Phil-US Expo organizer Isagani Morales, presented the plaques of recognition at ceremonies during the Expo.

“We are proud to honor the accomplishments, leadership and contributions of these outstanding men and women in their respective fields of expertise, ” said Awards Chair Seny Lipat, the president of the Phil. Nurses Association of America in 2002-04, and the 1999 Overall Chair of the Philippine-American Friendship Committee (PAFCOM),

“These professionals are truly deserving,” added Morales, president and CEO of Topnotch/Janmar. “I’m very proud to be affiliated with them, and to honor them as Topnotch awardees.”

The awardees are: April E. Talangbayan, Performing Arts; Carlos B. Almirante, Human Welfare; Benrome S. Abao, Mortgage Business Entrepreneurship; Roberto R. Demetillo, RN, and Cynthia D. Demetillo, RN, Community Development; Robert P. De Tagle, Communications; Guillermo M. Austria, Retail Business Entrepreneurship; Luis Ferdinand B. Pedron, Entertainment; and Ma. Corazon M. Velasco, RN, Health Care.

PAFCOM Holds Friendship Ball

JERSEY CITY -- The Philippine-American Friendship Committee (PAFCOM) recently held its 17th Friendship Night and Coronation Ball at the Sheraton Newark Airport Hotel to a full house, continuing a series of strong events leading up to the whole month of commemoration of Philippine-American Friendship in June.

The event was graced by Philippine Consul General in New York Cecilia B. Rebong and Ambassador to the UN Hilario Davide Jr., with Monsignor Oscar Aquino delivering the invocation. PAFCOM Overall Chair for 2007 Francis D. Sison pointed to the purpose of the Friendship Night as celebrating Philippine-US friendship and in presenting the five Ambassadresses of Goodwill, namely Miss Liberty Christina Marie McGarry, Mutya ng Silayan Czarina Rose Gonzales, Binibining Pilipinas Jane Ashley Garner, Mrs. Phil.-American Friendship Island Raagas, and Miss Phil.-American Friendship Melissa Ann Smirnow.

Last year’s Mrs. Phil.-American Friendship was Evelyn C. Sison.

Chairperson Sison remarked, “We are truly pleased that we had a full roster of attendees this year, including community leaders, our friends at the Consulate and at the Philippine Mission, and friends and supporters, and are energized as we go into the month of our June highlight activities, including the Grand Parade and Festival” on June 24 in downtown Jersey City.

Consul General Rebong noted that the Fil-Americans “constitute the backbone of that friendship” between the Philippines and the United States, and commended PAFCOM for its active role in sustaining that “pact cast in stone.” For his part, Amb. Davide for his part, praised the organization’s community development efforts that “enrich the quality of life of Filipinos and Americans alike.” The message from Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy noted “the vibrant Filipino community” and looked to continued “partnership in keeping Jersey City moving forward.” PAFCOM has three major events for June. The first is the Flag Raising on June 16 at 10am at Jersey City Hall, followed by the auditions for the Filipino Idol competition on the last Sunday of the month.
