National Artists’ Works On Exhibit At RP Center

NEW YORK CITY -- Now on exhibit at the Philippine Center in New York is the Center’s modern art collection of the works of Filipino Master Artists.

Presented by the Philippine Consulate General and the Philippine Center Management Board, to celebrate the 109th Anniversary of Philippine Independence, the first-time Exhibit is called “Pamana: Modernong Sining (A Heritage of Modern Art).”

The Philippine Center collection has works by National Artists Hernando Ocampo, Vicente Manansala, Cesar Legaspi, Arturo Luz, Ang Kiukok, Jose Joya, and other distinguished modern artists like Juvenal Sanso and Manuel Rodriguez, the father of Philippine Printmaking.

The collection was gradually acquired by the Philippine Center after it opened in November 14, 1974. Now, 34 years after, the public will have the opportunity to view modern art as expressed by distinguished Filipino artists like these various works of art for the first time.

Pamana is Filipino for “inheritance,” or “heritage,” Every work of art is a Pamana. The works of these distinguished artists reflect the various styles of Philippine modern art: from Manansala’s transparent cubism to Ang Kiu Kok’s expressionism, Hernando Ocampo’s abstractions of Philippine Flora to Arturo Luz’ sculpture reflecting minimalist geometric patterns.

The exhibit can be viewed by the public until June 15, from 9 to 5 on weekdays and by appointment on weekends (Free admission). For more information, call (212)575-4774 or visit www.pcgny.net.

Philippine Fiesta 07 Slated Aug. 18-19

NEW YORK -- On August 18-19, 2007, the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus New Jersey once again opens its doors to the largest indoor gathering of Filipinos on the East Coast.

Capably managed by Special Edition Press Inc. (SEPI), the 2007 Philippine Fiesta in America is the definitive celebration for Filipino Americans.

Each year, the Fiesta draws crowds of over 20,000 from far and wide, all looking forward to enjoying a festive celebration of the Filipino culture showcased with vibrant music, folkdances, regional cuisines and products from the Philippines.

The camaraderie that is seen at the Fiesta all throughout the weekend brings the feeling of togetherness of a unified people who despite the odds encountered at times, find solace and conquer homesickness at the Fiesta seeing familiar and new faces of same lineage.

The Asian American market’s total population of over 12 million (US Census 2000) has a median annual income of $56,316. The headcount and the increasing trend in spending are being considered seriously by corporate America in their marketing plans. An affluent segment of this attractive market is the Filipino-American, who not only exhibits the lowest poverty rate among Asians, but boasts of the highest per capita income in the state of New Jersey, where the Fiesta is held, and are one of the top earners in the state of New York.

Big-name companies bearing easily recognizable brands in various industries find their participation at the Philippine Fiesta tangibly gratifying as exhibitors or sponsors proven by their participation every year.

This year’s major sponsors are Citibank, Western Union, Megaworld International, D M Consunji Incorporated, SM Investment Corporation, Cathayland, Inc., Marigold Corporation (Mama Sita), Belle Corporation, Brittany Corporation, Costco Wholesale Club and ABS-CBN International’s The Filipino Channel.

Over 150 booths are set-up to accommodate business entities from the United States and the Philippines for a face-to-face contact with Filipino American consumers.

Regular exhibitors include Port Jersey, Madison Mortgage Corporation, Casa Victoria, Wall Street Financial Services, International Telecall, Prudential Financial Services, Alquiroz Jewelry, Gorilla Mobile, Fili Islander and Philippine Children’s Fund, to name a few.

In addition to the already aggressive efforts of the Philippine Fiesta to bring in producers and manufacturers from the Philippines to exhibit at the event, an initiative from the Philippine Department of Trade and Industries New York Trade Attache, Josephine Romero, to bring in DTI members from Central Luzon, Cebu and Davao, will contribute to bringing the trade exhibits to a larger scale.

Exhibiting companies from the Philippines come from the real estate development, handicrafts, home decors, Christmas decors, fashion, fashion accessory, bag, shoes and jewelry industries. Philippine Fiesta attendees profile is very impressive. A recent on-site survey showed that 65 percent of visitors have household incomes of over $50,000, 70 percent fall within the income-earning age groups between 19 and 59 years and more than 50 percent are professionals and business-owners.

More than a trade fair, Special Edition Press, Inc. hosts a star-studded Fiesta with some of the biggest names in Filipino showbusiness. This year, the Philippine Fiesta features a musical extravaganza capped by a live concert to be headlined by Philippine Concert Queen Pops Fernandez, TV/Movie/Recording Superstar Piolo Pascual, Las Vegas Entertainer Jun Polistico and Comedienne Pokwang.
