A FRESH immigrant from the Philippines steps out of a plane and sets foot on American soil. He is in tears.
He had a rough life back home, working as a freelance electrician. He has one child, a four-year old girl, who helps bring in money by selling flowers (Sampaguita) in the rough streets of Espańa. However, the man got his lucky break, as a contractor in the US asked for his services. He left his daughter with her grandparents. There was no looking back. He begins to work and accumulates enough money to endow him with all the material goods America can offer. He becomes an American. He gets his family and lives the American dream. Then he forgets his homeland. Such tale is common among us immigrants. We always forget our homeland once we set foot in a developed nation like the US. It is so common that a Chicago-based Fil Am band called ‘Bagwis’ recently put out an album tackling that very same issue, urging all of us Filipinos in America to open our eyes and remember - remember our homeland and be aware of what is going on there. The album is ‘Imulat Mo’. ‘Imulat Mo is a 15-track album produced by the band and recorded at their Hamlin House home in Chicago. The record contains some of the most original tracks ever released in the Fil Am music scene.
Track one, ‘My Child’is a hybrid recording of World, Jazz, Latin, R&B, and Hip Hop influences. It even has a sample of one of the most popular songs in Philippine history, ‘Anak’ by Freddie Aguilar, and a short Rap interlude. It is a 7-minute piece that is fitting to be the album opener because it dictates the pace and the general message of the entire release.
A potential hit in the set is the 3rd track called, ‘Ang Paglipas ng Panahon’. It has enough pop appeal to crossover to the Philippine mainstream. The song has a very catchy melody sung by the soothing yet powerful voice of their lead vocalist, Je Cacnio.
There is also some top notch jazzy, nylon guitar playing in this track by Mike Querubin, one of the group’s founders. Its message is strong and powerful, yet made smooth by the major 7th chords prevalent in the song.
The song ‘Hele’ had been a certified hit by the group even before the debut album came out. It was part of the first successful East Coast compilation ‘Rock in the Box’ released in 2006. The group traveled to New York City then for the compilation’s launch and instantly won followers. Like ‘My Child’, ‘Hele’ is Bagwis at the top of their game. Another potential hit in the album is ‘Nena ‘(a common name given to Filipna girls)- A song about the simplicity of a Filipina child- the purity of her views and her hopeful perspective on life. It is a song dedicated to all the ‘Nenas’ inside all Filipina women. During the band’s performance in the recent Poptimes Magazine Anniversary show in NYC, the crowd sang along to this enchanting song - an emotional moment, not easy to forget.
Bagwis is a collective made up of social workers, activists and artists in Chicago. They started writing and playing original music in 1998.
Their current lineup consists of: Je Cacnio –vocals/percussion, Ed Vergara–percussion and vocal, Randizio–vocals and percussion, Mike Querubin – guitar, Raven Guerrero–keyboard and guitar, Rich Querubin –bass, and Demetrio Maguigad – drum sand percussion.
The whole collection is a powerful one. It stresses the importance of staying in touch with the motherland and being knowledgeable of what is happening to our people. Yes, it is socio-political that’s why it is powerful. Matter of fact, I believe it is required listening for all Filipino immigrants anywhere in the world. While the songs in the album often talk about sad truths about the motherland, it is still, somehow, a joyful record.
In the final track, ‘Dinggin Mo’, where the band appears to be singing along to an acoustic guitar, amid a drinking session, that joy is very much present –a joy that everyone should aspire for. It is the joy of the awakened.
‘Imulat Mo’ by Bagwis – A must buy.

MANILA, Sept 11 (Mabuhay) -- KC Concepcion, daughter of megastar Sharon Cuneta and former actor Gabby Concepcion, has signed up with ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation Monday as one of the network's talents.
Present at the signing were Cory Valenzuela-Vidanes, ABS-CBN Senior Vice President for TV Production, Malou Santos of Star Cinema and Chit Guerrero, Head of ABS-CBN Special Projects Division.
KC (full name Kristina Cassandra) has just finished her studies in Paris, France so mom Sharon gave her the go-signal to join show business, initially as a television personality for public affairs shows.
KC graduated in August, with a degree in AB in International Corporate Communications and a minor in Theater Arts from the American University of Paris.
KC says she's happy to be one with the ABS-CBN family for she considers the network her home. "This is where I started. I sang here in my mom's shows. I was always with her when she was doing variety shows. ABS-CBN is home for me," KC reminisced.
She's currently wrapping up a TV documentary on her stay in Paris which will be aired in Channel 2 on September 23 at 10:30 p.m. The TV special will showcase her personal and academic life in Paris with emphasis on her post-university activities. Extensive and intensive research was done to lend an in-depth, yet hip presentation of her experiences in Europe.
The 22-year old charmer will be the show's host, a role that, she admitted, gave her the jitters. She thanked Guerrero, who was the show's producer, for drawing out the best from her.
Sharon is very proud of her eldest daughter's achievements. The Megastar readily gave her consent to KC's entry in showbiz so that she (KC) could inspire a lot of young people about hard work and the ardent pursuit of education in order to succeed in life.
Aside from doing documentaries, KC has been endorsing products and services including a line of apparel, a shampoo and a telecommunications gadget.
Star Cinema reportedly is wooing her to do a film but KC says she still has to get herself used to acting in the movies and to consult her mom about it.
KC is a woman of many talents and this isn't a surprise because her mom and dad are gifted with excellent artistic genes.
She joined MTV Asia as a VJ in 2003 and did occasional appearances for her mother's self-titled talk show "Sharon."
As a singer, she recorded the soundtrack for the musical "Beauty and the Beast" under the direction and supervision of Ryan Cayabyab. (MNS)

MANILA, Sept 11 (Mabuhay) -- Rachelle Ann Go's relationship with fellow singer Christian Bautista is going strong.
As a matter of fact, they will embark on a US tour sometime in October.
She will also guest in Mark Bautista's concert "Simply Irresistable" on October 13 at Aliw theater.
In the beginning, she was not so keen in having Christian as her boyfriend. She said she found him a little mayabang. What changed her mind?
"Hindi ako tinantanan. He just won't give up or accept defeat. Bihirang lalaki ang ganyan until I realized that his intentions are sincere. Another thing pa na ikinagusto ko ay ang pagiging family oriented ni Christian and his deep faith in God."
Hasn't he asked her hand in marriage yet?
"Hindi pa naman dahil sa tingin ko ay wala pa siyang balak. I always hear him tell his friends na at age 30 siya magsi-settle down. Okay lang sa akin because I have other plans na gusto ko ring matupad."
What other plans?
"I want to build my dream house for me and my family. I want to try the movies kung bibigyan ng chance. I want to be an international recording artist tulad ni Christian who is popular in Indonesia. I also want to finish college."
Rachelle is currently pursuing an Associate in Arts Degree at the University of the Philippines Open U (UPOU). This semester, she enrolled in two classes: Communication Skills 1 and Math 1 or Fundamental Concepts and Applications of Mathematics. (MNS)

MANILA, Sept 11 (Mabuhay) -- Because of hard work, comedienne Pokwang was able to build a four-bedroom house in Antipolo.
"I had one room made for my 11-year old daughter, pero ayaw gamitin at sa akin pa rin tumatabi sa pagtulog," she says. "Hinahayaan ko na lang kasi na-miss naman niya ako talaga dahil when she was a child, madalas na nasa Japan ako nagtatrabaho as a dancer."
She admits some people mistake her for a gay in drag. "Pero sa Hong Kong, where we shot 'Apat Dapat, Dapat Apat' with Rufa Mae Quinto, Candy Pangilinan and Eugene Domingo, hindi kayo maniniwala pero ang alindog ko ang hit sa mga Chinese. Pati 'yung driver-tour guide naming Chinese, si Benet, tuwang-tuwa kapag ginagaya ko si Lucy Liu. Kamukha ko raw talaga. Mas marami nga lang siyang freckles kaysa sa'kin."
What if Benet later on claims that they had a one-night stand, just like that guy in Barcelona who announced to one and all that they had an affair? "Sa edad kong ito, ayoko na ng one-night stand. Respeto na lang sa anak ko. Gusto ko, dun na lang ako sa lalaking for life ko makakasama makipag-sex. At 'yung si Benet, may asawa na 'yun, 'no?"
Didn't Benet mistake her for a gay? "Aba, pag nagbibihis nga kami sa van for change of costume, itong Benet, hindi bumababa so itinataboy namin, 'Benet, go out, we change clothes.' 'Yun pala gusto niyang siguruhin kung babae nga talaga ako."
Some people say she's now the number one comedienne at the ABS-CBN camp since she's busier than Ai Ai de las Alas who's had no show for nine months. "Ay, hindi po totoo 'yan. Huwag n'yo kaming intrigahin. Magiging malaking honor for me na makatrabaho siya dahil noon ko pa siya hinahangaan."
Her best role in "Apat Dapat" is as Cleopatra, with Australian actor Richard Everly as Mark Anthony. "Du'n ko lang na-realize na talagang bagay nga pala akong Cleopatra na diyosa ng kagandahan." (MNS)

MANILA, Sept 10 (Mabuhay) -- Talent manager and former sexy star Annabelle Rama was in a fighting mood during a television interview recently.
This as the latest installment as the marital melodrama between the controversial couple, actress Ruffa Gutierrez and her husband Turkish businessman Yilmaz Bektas, continued to unfold on television.
Annabelle said that any sweetness between her daughter Ruffa and estranged son-in-law Yilmaz is just an act for the TV cameras.
(All people watching TV get all tingly with excitement. I don't get any tingles. I curse and rant when I see Ruffa and Yilmaz together on TV. Ruffa even slaps Yilmaz affectionately on the shoulder. I get infuriated when I see that! You remember during their interview here, slap-slap, Ruffa going 'sweetie, sweetie' to Yilmaz, I get even more furious when I see that on TV! That's because it isn't true. It's not real. That's why Ruffa should come out and say what sort of person Yilmaz is.)
Annabelle and Yilmaz have not been on speaking terms ever since he came to the country to visit his daughters Lorin and Venice. She said she felt relief when Yilmaz returned to Turkey.
"Umalis si Yilmaz tuwang tuwa ako. Naalis 'yung mga tinik ko sa dibdib, sa puso ko. Pero nalungkot ako kasi at the same time mga apo ko, nalungkot sila kasi umalis yung tatay nila. Talagang mahal na mahal ng mga apo ko yung tatay nila," said Annabelle.
(When Yilmaz left I was so happy. All the thorns in my chest, in my heart disappeared. But I also felt sad because my granddaughters were sad because their father left. My granddaughters really love their father.)
Annabelle confessed that she purposely stayed away from her son-in-law while he was here in order to avoid a confrontation.
"Baka hindi ako makapagpigil mamura-mura ko siya ng mga baluktot na English kasi baluktot din siya mag-English eh, magkakaintindihan din kaming dalawa (I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to help myself and end up cursing him in broken English. He can't speak straight English either so we'll understand each other)," said Annabelle.
No forgiveness
Annabelle said that Yilmaz made no attempt to communicate with her during his visit, adding that it was just as well because she wouldn't have spoken to him anyway. Then Abunda asked her if she could ever forgive her son-in-law.
"Hindi. Hindi ko sya kayang patawarin kasi hindi s'ya magaling na tao eh, masama siyang tao. Hindi s'ya dapat para kay Ruffa (No. No I can't forgive him because he's not a good man, he's a scoundrel. He is not the right man for Ruffa)," she replied.
According to Annabelle, Yilmaz exhibits a "Jekyll-and-Hyde" personality especially when he gets jealous or angry.
"Mabait lang s'ya kung sa mabait, pero once magselos si Yilmaz, 'yung mga sungay naglalabasan lahat. Ang sama-sama talaga niya pag nagagalit."
"Kaya yan si Ruffa she has to tell the truth sa harap ng maraming tao. Wag na syang magdrama-drama, wag na niyang kakampihan yung lalaking yon, alam ko mahal niya pero sabi ko sa kanya, (ang pagmamahal niya sa yo) Ruffa fake lang yan eh kasi kung talagang mahal ka sa isang lalaki, mamahalin ka kung ano ka."
(He can be nice if if wants to, but once he gets jealous, he becomes a monster. He's really terrible when he's angry. That's why Ruffa has to tell the truth to people. She should stop acting as if everything is okay between them. She should stop taking his side. I know she loves him, but I keep telling her that his love for her is fake. If a man really loves her, he will love her for who she is.)
Annabelle said that until now, Yilmaz cannot accept that his Ruffa is an actress and a celebrity and still objects to the clothes she wears on the job.
'He trashed his room'
Annabelle said that her son-in-law again showed his Mr. Hyde persona after seeing Ruffa, who is a co-host of "The Buzz", wearing sexy clothing during the show.
(After Yilmaz saw Ruffa wearing a sexy outfit, a micromini, he began cursing and trashing his room. He broke a lot things in there. Is that right? Ruffa is an actress. He should understand that such outfits are part of Ruffa's job. Ruffa would never wear anything obscene anyway. I don't know what he did to her the night she came to him after that episode of "The Buzz".)
Finally, Ruffa joined Annabelle and Abunda on-camera. Mother and daughter faced each other testily. Abunda remarked on how much tension there was on the set.
Ruffa tried to steer to the conversation to other topics but Annabelle was adamant about confronting her daughter about Yilmaz.
Then Ruffa asked about the new movie that her mother is doing for Regal Films. "Tell us about your new movie, 'Monster Mom'," asked Ruffa.
It turns out that the film Annabelle is doing really does have that title. It's a comedy riding on Annabelle's feisty and confrontational reputation. But the tone of Ruffa' voice showed that the irony of her question wasn't lost on her.
Ruffa then asked a follow up question to her mother. "Aren't you offended that your film's title is 'Monster Mom'?"
"Ba't ako mao-offend Ruffa, kung monster mom ang tingin mo sa akin eh di tatanggapin ko (Why should I be offended Ruffa? If you think I'm a monster mom I'll accept it)," replied Annabelle.
'You're insane if you take him back'
Then Annabelle threw back a question to her daughter. "Ano'ng remembrance ang iniwan niya sa iyo? Hindi naman kayo sweet eh. Sweet lang kayo dalawang araw, after that wala na. Atsaka umalis na s'ya Ruffa may binigay sa iyong ano si Yilmaz? Magsabi ka ng totoo, day."
(What remembrance did he leave to you? You're not really sweet with each other. You were only sweet for two days and then it was gone. And when he left he gave you something, Ruffa. What was it? Tell the truth, honey.)
Ruffa replied that Yilmaz gave her a rose when he left, but Annabelle disputed this and insisted that Ruffa confess.
"Ano iyong iniwan niya sa iyo na hindi mo makakalimutan? Kung papatawarin mo pa siya luka-luka ka na, Ruffa. Talaga maniwala ka sa akin. 'Pag bumalik s'ya dito e-entertainin mo pa siya? Ewan ko, surrender na ako sa iyo, 'day. Kasi nakita ko na ang totoong pagkatao ni Yilmaz," Annabelle insisted.
(What did Yilmaz give you that you won't ever forget? If you forgive him then you're really insane Ruffa. Believe me if he comes back here and you still entertain him, I just don't know, I'll give up on you, honey. That's because I've seen the real person that is Yilmaz).
'Who break your head?'
One day before Yilmaz left the Philippines to return to Istanbul, Ruffa appeared with him for an interview on "The Buzz". She wore a bandage on her forehead. She joked that Yilmaz hit her on the head for wearing revealing clothing on the show.
Yilmaz also joked about the bandage. "When I saw her with bandage I ask her, 'who break your head'?", he told a reporter for "The Buzz". The couple kept on making funny remarks about the bandage but never mentioned why Ruffa was wearing it.
Those jokes now take on a more sinister context in light of Annabelle's statements and Ruffa' early accusations against Yilmaz. During the height of the scandal surrounding their separation several months ago, Ruffa accused Yilmaz of physical abuse that amounted to torture while they lived as husband and wife in Turkey.
Ruffa threatened to walk off the set if her mother keeps asking about Yilmaz. Abunda eased tensions by putting the conversation to a close and asking Ruffa what she prays about now.
"Yung dasal ko siguro is to protect me and to guide me, for God to show me the right way (My prayer is for protection and guidance, for God to show me the right way)," she replied. (MNS)

MANILA, Sept 13 (Mabuhay) -- Now it's final. After the much ballyhooed would-be transfer to GMA-7, Ai Ai delas Alas has finally renewed her contract as an ABS-CBN talent.
“Masaya talaga ako," the comedienne said.
"I’m thankful to ABS-CBN. Alam ko na mahal nila ako rito. Nagpapasalamat ako sa lahat ng mga big boss dito,” she said wiping away tears in her eyes.
The contract signing was a light, laughter-filled occasion, especially when she received hugs and kisses from ABS-CBN President Gabby Lopez who also offered her a bouquet of fresh flowers.
“Alam ko, matagal na akong gusto ni Mr. Gabby Lopez. Noon, nagpigil lang siya. Ngayon, hindi na niya napigilan na maibulalas ang kanyang tunay na damdamin sa akin,” Ai Ai said in jest. Mr. Lopez could not help but laugh out loud.
De la Alas signed a two-year contract with ABS-CBN that will give her another chance to prove her worth as a comic actress. She is set to star in a still untitled new soap opera where she would lend the wacky part with fellow actress Judy Ann Santos; a show which will feature her doing some antics in Japan and another new teleserye, among others.
She is also very excited about the third and final edition of her “Ang Tanging Ina” series, “Ang Tanging Ina Ninyong Lahat” which will be filmed very soon.
Ai Ai is also slated to do “Lastikman” with comedian Vhong Navarro.
During the contract signing, Ai Ai could not help but feel nervous. Her manager, Boy Abunda, came to her rescue, saying she had palpitation earlier but was able to subdue it.
ABS-CBN’s Senior Vice President for TV Production Cory Valenzuela-Vidanes requested a waiter in the venue to give Ai Ai a glass of water which was immediately handed to the comedienne.
“Talagang ninerbiyos ako sa contract signing na ito. Matagal ko kasing hinintay ito. Napatunayan ko na malaki pa rin ang tiwala sa akin ng ABS-CBN,” she confessed.
When asked what took her so long to renew her contract, Ai Ai confided she just waited her turn and added ABS-CBN management knew all along what was good for her.
Gone are the days when she would feel unwanted about not having any project, which led her to talk to GMA Network’s Senior Vice President for TV Production Wilma Galvante for a job. It was this incident that started talk that Ai Ai was moving to the Kapuso Network.
Ai Ai, however, was quick to defend herself and said it was very normal for her and Galvante to pour out personal things with each other because the latter is a kumare, being a ninang to one of her kids.
It was a jolly contract signing made happier by Ai Ai and the people who gave full support to the comebacking talent. “Nakakaloka. Parang sa Born Again. Parang Christian na nagbabalik-loob,” said Ai Ai as she burst in guffaws.
Also present during the event were Enrico Santos, Star Cinema’s Executive Producer Malou Santos, Lopez, Vidanes, Abunda and Deo Endrinal. (MNS)

MANILA, Sept 11 (Mabuhay) -- VIRGO, also known as the Virgin, is one of the 2 zodiac signs and those who celebrate their birthdays from August 21 through September 22 fall under this sign.
Viva artist resident rocker Carlo Aquino turned 22 last September 3 and he might as well be called Virgin Boy since he doesn't approve of pre-marital sex.
He had no birthday wish either and simply spent the day with his friends and family.
Fresh from a US tour with former girlfriend Angelica Panganiban and the final three of ABS-CBN Pinoy Dream Academy, he is kept busy promoting his band's debut album. The band, called Kollide, recently released their first single, Ala-Ala.
"Our immediate goal is to play light alternative music. Gusto namin ma-dig muna ng masa kung sino kami at kung ano talaga ang mga expressions namin. Ang real goal namin ay makagawa ng songs na talagang pang-long term. We have played in many shows before but nothing prepared us for the experience of going into the studio and hammering out our sound. Grateful kami sa Viva at may paniwala sila sa aming musika," Carlo explains.
Carlo has appeared in a few controversial movies which caught the ire of moralists as well as the censors. A recent film was Tuli which has yet to be shown in commercial theaters.
On television, he just finished Sinasamba Kita, a soap for GMA7.
Carlo was only 16 when he fell in love with Angelica Panganiban and their teen romance lasted for sometime. They had to call it quits because they spent more time arguing about petty things. "Pero iniyakan ko po ang aming pagbi-break dahil matagal ang aming pinagsamahan. To this day, we have remained friends," he says.
Another girl which caught Carlo's interest is Maja Salvador whose debut movie the actor has yet to watch. His interest waned, though, when Maja told him that she is prioritizing her career over anything else.
Carlo says he is in no hurry to have a girlfriend. "I am more focused on becoming a director whether indie or mainstream movie." (MNS)
