Pork Chop at the 2008 Pinoy Musik Festival
by Charmaine P. Lim
THE comedic singing duo, Renato "Porky Gomez" and Romeo "Choppy" Vargas, better known as "Pork Chop Duo," are bringing laughs to the second annual 2008 Pinoy Musik Festival and Expo de Mayo on May 17-18 at the Meadowlands Expo Center. The talented Duo is a part of the star-studded lineup at the Festival, featuring Sam Milby, MYMP and Kris Lawrence.

Gomez and Vargas first teamed up in 1980, under the moniker, "RnR Duets," until they re-named themselves "Pork Chop Duo" in 1983, a nod to their personas as two jovial fat men who enjoy poking fun at themselves. Since then, this trailblazing team of Filipino standup comedy has amassed 14 albums to their credit, including Gold Record Awards for their compilation, Pork Chop Duo - The Best of Stand-Up Comedy Vol. 11.

Their brand of comedy combines singing their own raucous versions of popular hit songs and original compositions, interspaced with jokes inspired by real life observations.

For the past 25 years, the Duo has toured extensively, bringing their act abroad to Filipino communities in the U.S., Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. On March 21 of this year, Pork Chop Duo made an appearance at the Cache Creek Casino and Resort in California.

S.i.G.H. to Perform at Phil-US Expo '08
STRIVING in Greater Hopes (S.i.G.H) is a melodic hard rock act from Long Island, New York that is ready to break out into today’s evolving music scene. S.i.G.H has been known to leave audiences in a state of euphoria and awe with their haunting vocals, crushing guitars and thunderous rhythm section.

The members of the band include Sigh Robes on vocals, JayR Castillo on bass, Daniel Buquicchio on guitars and Frankie Bianco on drums. Each member of the band contributes their influences into the music that they write, record and produce. This creates a dynamic hard rock group that draws inspiration from pop rock, alternative, metal, and blues. S.i.G.H does not wish to align themselves with a particular genre or scene.

Their goal is to create music that people can relate to. The band has built their own studio where they recently recorded their first full length album, “Between Sin and Solitude”. The album’s eleven tracks represent the band’s originality and bring together their diverse musical and cultural backgrounds. Their album is available now online on iTunes and CDBABY.com and LTCDS.com.

Each member of S.i.G.H has the same goal: to play music for the masses. They are ambitious, professional, and above all dedicated to the music that they play. They've played with numerous popular bands from the Philippines like Sarah Geronimo, Aiza Seugerra, Kamekazee, Barbie Almalbis, South Border, Kitchie Nadal, Parokya ni Edgar, Introvoys, and MYMP. Striving in Greater Hopes is certainly a band to look out for in today’s colorful urban rock scene.

To hear S.i.G.H.'s music, please visit their official website at www.sighrobes.com or www.myspace.com/sighband. Make sure your speakers are on because the music will automatically play for you. You can watch them at the coming Phil-US Expo '08 at the New Jersey National Guard Armory in Jersey City on May 17 and 18.
