MUSIC played by the University of the Philippines Alumni Friends Rondalla was warmly received at the second annual Filipino Making Waves Festival in Toronto, Canada recently.
The group opened the festival on August 15, Friday evening at the beautiful waterfront Ontario Place, followed by a performance at a VIP awardees reception., and concluded with another concert on August 16, Saturday afternoon.
This New Jersey–based rondalla played to a wild applause as the Canadian audience sang along to the group’s repertoire of traditional Philippine folk music. They also heard the group’s rendition of many Broadway and classical favorites.
Soprano Amor McGuiness held the audience in her hands with her interpretation of Dalagang Pilipina, Dahil Sa Iyo and Habanera.
Many in the audience commented they have not heard such fine Philippine folk music in a long time. And Yes, UPAF Rondalla was invited back for another performance next year.
Generous sponsors helped fund the trip to Toronto so th Rondall could spread its musical wings. They were Roger and Nimpha Alama, Harry and Mila Brillantes, Aguida Johnson, Dr. Emmanuel and Mrs. Veronica Pangan and Nestor and Dr. Connie Uy.
The event, produced by Show Philippines Festivals of the Arts in Toronto, highlighted the richness of Filipino culture.
Other festival performers from both the Unites States and the Philippines included: Marco Sison, David Pomeranz, Boy Katindig, Tillie Moreno, Lirio Vital, Melissa Reyes, Mikey Bustos, Angelo Pizarro, and Mon Torralba.

ON September 6, 2008, Saturday, GK volunteers, advocates and supporters across the USA and Canada will be walking 5 kilometers (5k) equivalent to 3.1 miles, signifying solidarity, involvement and commitment to the mission and vision of GK and to raise awareness to the plight of the poorest of the poor third world countries.
The distance of the walk might be insignificant to many, especially those who are fit and athletically blessed. Imagine walking the distance and more because you have to, in slippers or barefoot even- scavenging for your next meal, recyclables to sell and plainly because you don't have a choice and an accepted way of life.
The event, though ambitious and quite significant in magnitude, is dwarfed by the vision and mission the organization (GK) is trying to pursue and fulfill. To date, GK ANCOP USA has helped transform slums and build over 1,500 communities mainly in the Philippines, through generous and committed partners and volunteers in the US and Canada. GK communities also exist in Pnomh Penh, Cambodia and Papua, New Guinea. Many have walked in solidarity, for a cure. Join us and walk for the poor. Be the voice and the face of the invisible people society has neglected.
Walk the talk! Walk the walk! Do the GK 5k Walk! Locally, the GK Walk will be held at Murphy Park, 1570 Olympic Drive, Milpitas, CA 95035. Register online or on site. If you intend to register on site, please contact Fred Keen, (408) 593-6675 or email agkeen@gmail.com to be counted and to ensure you get a commemorative t-shirt.
On site registration starts at 9:30 AM followed by the walk at 10:00 AM. A festive potluck and GK family fellowship awaits you after the walk.
