THE ASSOCIATION of Filipino Franchisers, Inc. (AFFI) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) plan to come up with a manual to help micro, small and medium entrepreneurs (MSMEs) prepare for the planned Southeast Asian economic integration in 2015.

“The manual will provide background information on how to do business in another ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nation) country,” Teresita Ngan Tian, auditor of AFFI and owner of pizza franchiser Lot’s A Pizza, said at a press conference yesterday in Makati City. “If we want to go abroad, we really have to be prepared.”

Ms. Tian said that the DTI and AFFI met earlier this week to discuss the manual’s details.

“The manual should be ready by June next year. It will be available not only for AFFI members but also for other MSMEs,” she said.

Several businessmen have raised concerns that local businesses might not be prepared for the coming economic integration.

AFFI President Armando O. Bartolome, however, believes that Filipino businesses are ready and can compete in a bigger market.

“They [Filipino companies] are ready, and they are willing to compete. It will be a good positioning for entrepreneurs to be at par with their Southeast Asian counterparts,” Mr. Bartolome told reporters yesterday. -- Daryll Edisonn D. Saclag (Business World)
