MANILA -- Vice President Jejomar Binay lauded the surrender of businesswoman Janet Napoles, but hopes this will finally reveal those should be punished for the pork scam, regardless of political affiliation.

In a statement, Binay said: “It's good that she surrendered. I just hope she will tell the truth and bare everything she knows so that those involved in the scam would be brought to justice and be made accountable for their transgressions to the Filipino people, regardless of their political affiliations.”

Napoles surrendered to no less than President Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday night. Some deemed the turn of events as leaning positively in the direction of Aquino’s allies.

After sending feelers to presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, Napoles met with Aquino at the Malacanang Palace. Lacierda said they had to secure Napoles, who had threats to her life.

Aquino and other Cabinet officials, including Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas, accompanied Napoles to Camp Crame for her booking.

Meanwhile, Binay said it’s still early if Napoles can become state witness.

“As for the possibility that Mrs. Napoles be considered a state witness, as a lawyer, I would say it's too early to tell. There are requirements before a suspect is made a state witness, among these being that the evidence against the said suspect must be weak. And that has yet to be established,” Binay said.
